Early game -> Trees
Number of ">" is how much better.
The DLC Carob Tree is great to move onto after the early apple grind. Tamarind are great after that. For diamonds, Rubber Trees are quite good. For honey, the DLC Cotton Candy Trees are a godsend.
Clownfish is probably the most affordable fish to start amassing wealth from. Then upgrading to Snappers or even skipping straight to Sturgeons, which are the best fish overall - if you can afford them.

Hmm... Perhaps I need to dig out my notes again after all... D_D Or work on compiling my minutely detailed notes the rest of the way and then make calculations with the new data... @_@
Sturgeon - 1209
Perch - 1125
Red Snapper - 1067
Oyster - 1061
Red Sea Bream - 1033
Everything else was under 1000 per minute per 100 fish, statistically. An individual's personal luck modifier could alter these statistics drastically. If you have amazing luck, Perch is the best at 10.5 per fish per minute for a big catch over the next highest at 9.8 with Sturgeon. But that is all assuming that I made good math. xD
Always on or sometimes on doesn't matter, an object that is being farmed will yield what it yields during active play.
For fish specifically, Clownfish ranks in at #12 for $/min. These are base rates but increase with fish level and pond filter level.
Clownfish and Snapper are recommended because they have significantly lower Return of Investment rates than the other fish on this list (which is how fast you get the money back that you spent on it, lower = better). Sturgeons are recommended as the final fish when affordable, simply because it's the best fish.

6) Sea Bream - 5.38 - Costs 40k
7) Snapper - 4.78 - Costs 7.5k
8) Discus Fish - 4.30 - Costs 15k
9) Blue Tang - 4.13 - Costs 10k
10) Clam - 4.02 - Costs 7k
11) Mussel - 4.02 - Costs 12.5k
12) Clownfish - 3.94 - Costs 6k
In a game I invest this much time into, I wasn't willing to trust a foreign document blindly. Had to do the testing, verifying and calculating myself. Plus I am OCD with organization in spreadsheets and like the layouts to be clean and logical with lots of advanced extraneous calculations, some even situational.
All wrong.
It takes an eternity for trees to pay for themselves.
Fastest way at the beginning are Crops. They need some work, but you can plan your crops the way you will play. Whenn you go to sleep plant something that needs 6-8 hours to grow. If you will be at school or work next morning, you can plant something that needs 10-16 hours to grow.
While playing active, plant something that only need 10 minutes up to maximum of an hour to grow.
In early and mid game there is only one tree that is really worth it, the gummy tree to generate dimods.
In mid and late games the best options to have a good cashflow are Flowers with sprinklers.
Fishes are a only good to get passive cash, when you have a farmhand to care for them.
The best Money/Time option are reindeer, but you have to keep them on cooldown.
