Why are avocados considered vegetables?
My question is simple: why are avocados consider to be vegetables in this game? I have never, ever heard anyone referring to avocado as a "vegetable", and why would they, since avocado is clearly a fruit. I have been now doing research on all three languages that I can speak (finnish, english and swedish), and I have yet to find a single source that would refer to avocados as "vegetables". Every single source says that avocado is a fruit.

So what an earth were the developers thinking when they made avocado a vegetable in this game? It doesn't make any sense, especially when other fruits like apples, bananas, peaches, tamarinds etc are in the fruit category.

So can someone please tell me what is the reason for this absolutely absurd decision of making avocado a vegetable? This thing disturbs me very much, and I'm even considering leaving a negative steam review for this game if I won't get a good answer to this.

Not sure if it was an oversight due to copy/paste, or just that we didn't properly think about it, but we didn't intentionally set Avocados as vegetables and we'll change it to fruits in a later update.

As for Tomatoes being Vegetables instead of fruits, that's entirely intentional and we're going with the culinary purpose instead of the botanical one.

Yeah, I was wondering if someone would bring up tomatoes in this discussion. :D They are fruits too, but I think that avocados and tomatoes have one huge difference between them that makes many people call tomatoes vegetables and still call avocados fruits;

Avocados grow on a tree! Tomatoes can be easily grown even on a small garden, or on that small greenhouse that your grandma has on her backyard. I even know people who grow tomatoes inside their apartments, or on the balcony.

This is not the case with avocados; you can't easily grow them on a small garden or other limited space, because they grow on trees.

And I think that this is a huge difference between the two.

I think that this is the thing that many people use to diferiate between fruits and veggies. It's not really a 100% factual thing to do, but it's an easy and clear way.

Edible things that grow on trees == Fruits, or sometimes berries
Edible plants that are reasonably small and can be grown on limited space ( without blocking the view out of your neighbours window) == vegetable

So this is the reason why I think that it's kind of okay to call tomatoes "vegetables", even though they are actually fruit. But avocados, come on! They grow on a freaking tree!

... you can make life unnecessarily difficult, that's probably true.

So we write a scientific treatise on Farm Together, here on the subject of avocado.

When does something count as fruit and when as vegetable?
The distinction of whether something counts as fruit or vegetable is not always easy to see, and sometimes there is no clear answer as to whether it is fruit or vegetables.

1. Botanical definition
From a botanical point of view, it is crucial that fruit from the flowering and vegetables is produced from another part of a plant. Apples, plums or even strawberries are definitely part of the fruit. But since cucumbers or pumpkins are also made from flowers, they are botanically a fruit.

2. Food definition
The food definition rule states that fruit comes from plants with perennial crops, whereas vegetables come from annuals. Accordingly, apples, plums or strawberries are also part of the fruit here. For example, as cucumbers are annual plants, they are part of the vegetables. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

3. Linguistic distinction
In everyday usage, the usual consumption is crucial. Accordingly, fruit is sweet and eaten raw, whereas vegetables are either eaten raw or cooked and usually not sweet. So here too the cucumber belongs to the vegetables and an apple or a plum to the fruit.

Avocado: fruits or vegetables?
The avocado is in the distinction of either the fruit or the vegetables assigned.

1. According to botanical definition
From a botanical point of view, the avocado is clearly fruit, a berry. The avocado grows on a tree. The avocado tree belongs to the laurel family and is a tropical plant. From a botanical point of view, the fruits of these plants are assigned to the fruits and thus indisputably to the fruit.

2. According to food definition
The avocado tree bears perennial fruits, making the avocado is basically a fruit. However, the avocado could constitute an exception in the regulation of food definition.

3. According to language distinction
In everyday life, it depends heavily on the look and the taste, when something is classified as fruit or vegetables. The green pulp and rather tart taste of the avocado is often associated with the vegetables. In addition, there is little fruit that is green. Although you can eat the avocado warm, it is usually processed raw. It is often made into guacamole or sushi.

Is the avocado fruit or vegetables? - Conclusion
Whether the avocado is a fruit or vegetable, can not say clearly. The distinction between whether something is fruit or vegetables is intuitively affected in everyday life and is derived from one's own experiences.

From the botanical point of view, the plant from which the fruit originates is authoritative. The definition of food is basically the avocado as a fruit, but it could be that the avocado is an exception.

Through these different approaches, confusion arises time and again, whether the avocado is now considered fruit or vegetables. The avocado is botanically seen without doubt the fruit assigned. But the name as a vegetable is also correct from the point of view of everyday usage. Consequently, the avocado can be both fruit and vegetables, it depends only on how to argue.
