Also you'll need to set the type of permissions you want visitors to have. There are different types of permissions, all of which are explained in the "How to play" section of the pause menu.
Also, just a side note, but to change permissions of your farm, you must be logged out of your farm and on the main screen. Navigate towards My Farms, (I'm sorry but I play on a controller so I'm not sure what the keyboard option is) chose the "details" option and then below your farm details there are the options to change farm permissions.
Another thing to let you know. If you're a low level you might not get many visitors. I didn't start getting any visitors until I hit around level 80. And even now, I may get one or two visitors but I don't get loads. I think it's because there's not really much of an incentive to visit other farms apart from a lightning boost that gives you more xp and resources as you're harvesting stuff on your own farm.
None of the decorations is necessary. They're optional, only.
I personally visit farms that are ONLY set to plant AND harvest, because farms with harvest only, depending on your luck, you may find only empty fields, should the owner beeing idle...
Ofc setting your farm to plant and harvest may lead you with some desillusions with what visitors have planted, so that's a difficult choice, but also I have seen nicely organised farms with signs of what is wanted in each fields, and I love those, because by following those signs, you never feel bad about what you do.
Not sure to understand, because sand - teepee etc are purely decorative. So they have no use, thus not needed.
But players like me love to play a game of a decorative farm, instead of a [functional] & [efficient] farm. While I like to visit those for my boost, I personally would have no fun at all playing on boring large squares of fields and the same rectangles of trees in line...
My forrests are a mix of trees and a nightmare to harvest, but damn, do I love the look of that.

EDIT : My farm is currently set to [Local] because I want to be very proud of what visitors will be able to see, thus mine is not vailable for any visit yet.
