I just restarted after the crash.... felt really bad about that! :)
I think my engines got damaged by going too high....
The devs noted that if you go to high you get struck by lightning and engine damage from volcanic soot.
1. Hover up 300-500 feet from starting position, then switch to jet mode, throttle at max until you start gaining altitude again.
2. Climb to about 1000 feet, then cut throttle to about 2/3-3/4 of the way to the orange line. For awhile, you'll maintain an upward velocity of about 10ft/sec.
3. Whenever you start losing altitude, bring throttle up above the orange line and regain a bit of upward velocity.
4. If your altitude increases above 1500ft, cut throttle further or altogether and coast until you get down around 1000. When you're close to your target you might want to aim for a lower altitude, depending on the surrounding landscape.
5. When you get to about 1000 feet from your destination, switch to hover mode, full throttle and full backward thrust until you come to a standstill. Then cut thrust so you start losing altitude.
6. You might still be low on charge when you reach Ragnar Transit, so practice those landings!
Fuub: I hadn't noticed that, but if it's true, it should definitely be fixed!
Be sure to grab some B2 rations before you go, worth 20k on the island.
The flight characteristics are not the same as a plane. Pointing the nose up or down will not bleed or increase your speed. When you get near your destination in plane mode, about 10k, pull the throttle way back into the orange and you will start shedding speed and can manually pull your nose up if altitude gets too low. If your speed is less than 150 when you transition back to VTOL you won't waste a lot of fuel slowing down.
Just watch your speed, hit the M key in flight and you will get a nice green circle that shows your destination and keeps you lined up.
A lot of these tips are very hard to do with keyboard alone, I am using CH stick and throttle. I have a key mapped for F on the stick and use buttons for rudder (Q & E) on my throttle.
