Zen mode is meant for players that prefer more of an idle gameplay. When you switch to zen mode you will notice that towns no longer have consumption which means that you can complete them at your own pace. The removal of consumption rate is balanced by raising the total requirements for town completion.

No consumption but 10x increased requirements for towns. I only suggest using it if you don't want to play actively at all and don't like the challenge of completing towns while they drain delivered resources. There are plenty of businesses with high resource requirements in normal mode, so you will experience the passive play even in it.

You can switch to zen mode at any time. This will create a separate save file and transfer all your progress from normal mode. You can continue playing using either of those two saves (but they become independent of each other so you can't transfer progress between them). You can't switch back to the normal mode from zen so any progress made in that mode will stay there.

I only play Zen Mode. I want to play, but having to plan every town around its consumption was for me, unbearable and I had totally quit playing. With Zen mode the game is still extremely rewarding, I just don't have to spend a hour trying to plan all the resources to move around just to solve one town. I would recommend playing normal mode and if it gets unbearable in the planning you have to do then switch to zen mode rather than quit. Zen is way more relaxed and requires a lot less high intensive planning. If you want to play while watching a movie, play Zen mode, If you want a time consuming hard core, pay strict attention to it challenge, play normal. The games puzzles are the same, and the game will still take a very long time to complete. No one has yet to complete it. (To the point Sacada has finished, as the game is not yet finished) I have played over 1000 hours 90 percent plus in zen mode) and only have 1770 town completed. And they are getting more and more complex to complete. I think this game is amazing. I have no idea how sacada does it.

That's sad.
Would be great if players can switch between active and passive gameplay.
