1 How do you manage to get mailboxes delivered by trains ?
I'm currently finishing to open the last few roadfixes from Russia / ex soviet block countries / Balkans. Still fighting to open trains from west USA.
Started opening Africa, but not putting much effort there, with single truck.
I have yet to this point, where money is far less the issue than the truck limits per size (12 x 40t for instance), but vast majority of MAILBOX (caps for emphasis, not shouting) have to be delivered by truck.
Trains can deliver Airfields / Airports and some specific towns that are train connected only, but between Japan, Russia, & opened countries in Europe for now, I would really love to deliver large quantities mailboxes by train..
So either it's later in game, or I am missing a part somewhere, but mailboxes to me are a truck only delivery.
2 How do you tell which is high value cargo ? Pure logic and real world counterparts ? because in game, unless you start to crush down numbers, there is no "quick & obvious" ways to tell the value of a cargo.
Not that it's really important to me, but your answer just raised those 2 questions from me.
(Edited a wrong word & missing sentence ending)
I believe he meant "businesses". I think when businesses were initially implemented in the very first module they were called mailboxes and only had very low requirements. Now we have Airports/Airfields/Ports with high requirements as businesses too. There are also basic businesses that are connected to railroads by default, although those are rare and I don't remember them having large requirements.
You can't connect uncompleted things to railroads (and can only connect towns after their completion by building a railroad station) so no way to complete businesses that you are talking about (the ones with small requirements) with trains, you have to use trucks for that. There is a special end-game upgrade that lets you queue several businesses. You need to complete full country to be able to upgrade one truck. It may be helpful if you learn how to use it.
There is a button at the top of the screen which opens recent deliveries log. It shows something like "1000=3000(20t)-2000", where 1000 in this example is how much cash you get after the delivery, 3000 is how much you are paid for selling the resources and 2000 is how much you pay for transportation. So if you divide 3000 by 20 you get the cost of the product per ton. It's just a single action to calculate the cost of the product so shouldn't take too much time.
Good products are Machinery (huge demand for it in "Russia" airport), jewels, computers, cars, planes and other high tech things. So yeah, you can use real life logic to estimate which ones cost more.
Usually just playing the game and not doing long range deliveries with trucks is enough to have positive income. Ocasionally you find a business that requires several thousands in requirements and unless you deliver to it from the other side of the continent you get a lot of cash from it. Dedicating several trucks or trains to such large businesses will provide a steady income while you yourself focus on something else. Just make sure to send 1 truck per requirement. It is better to send 10 trucks to complete 10 different requirements instead of using all 10 trucks to complete one requirement, then switch to 2nd one, then to 3rd, etc. At the same time you can use 2-3 remaining trucks to complete small businesses actively.
Yeah so ok, nothing new then, and indeed you confirm all I thought there was to it.
The only thing I wanted to truely confirm was indeed the "mailbox" thing, and not miss the opportunity if that changed in a further country.
I have been cought totally offguard by Italy, thinking that building there would be "lockers" like in Australia or Germany (examples) and to find out I finally imported by boats needed goods to clear the city to open Austria / Italy until I was delivering that city and found out I could have built industries instead.
Have a nice weekend, and thanks for your dedication answering that forum and helping so many peeps.
