Seeing through Smoke Grenades
Is this possible with a gadget? It seems like whenever I throw a smoke, I still get shot through it.

Not even the thermal sight on the tank turret can see through it, but if someone's far enough in it they can see through the smoke somewhat.

Also if you're firing, they can see where the bullets are coming from and aim there.

consider that 99% of players are hacking

Sniper glint I believe is also visible through smoke, so that could also be it.

Yeah, I'm not sniping or firing. Literally throwing a smoke from behind cover, waiting a few seconds, and getting one shotted running across the smoke. Kinda sus?

I've had similar experiences lately. I would say that the amount of wallhackers has gone up substantially.

Alright. I guess that's how it is. I'm just glad I'm not the only one thinking that I'm crazy when stuff like that happens.

Spectate the top players, and you can quickly tell, keep an eye on how often they are shooting and getting a kill.

1 shot one kill, 100% of the time is a bit sussy bakka.
I tried using the thermal scope on a weapon and had mixed results. The smoke grenade definitely starts thin and gets thicker (more opaque) after a few seconds. Smoke and players both appear white in it. You're better off using the thermal scope elsewhere.

If you're running into a cloud of smoke that you've thrown then you're using it wrong. It's meant to block lines of sight. If someone is aiming at a cloud of smoke because they know enemies are behind it, then they are going to be able to see you emerge from it faster than you can spot them from whatever random spot they're in.

You can definitely get kills by shooting at people who are shooting through smoke. Their bullet tracers make for good estimates. Don't forget that someone on the enemy team knows what the map looked like before the smoke and might try to shoot you through it based on where they think people will walk. Personally, I see it as a good opportunity to throw a grenade. You can also get shot from the sides where smoke isn't giving you any cover.

What would be the right way to use a smoke? To be clear, I'm not running into the cloud of smoke, I'm just running across it towards another area of cover.

Visual line-of-sight obstruction. A good smoke grenade covers a choke point, preventing the enemy from getting a visual on what is behind it.

In wide open areas, a good smoke would be one that divides the frontline into two sides, allowing your team time to breathe and set up defenses. Most players will shoot into a smoke expecting people on the other side, so be prepared for pre-fire coming from it, and only move when you're reasonably confident that they don't know where you are.

You should refrain from throwing smokes in areas you intend to walk into. The smoke blinds you as well as anyone else, so you're ultimately hindering yourself, as if the enemy sees smoke you lose the element of surprise AND you can't see anything.

Edit: if defending an area, smokes are more helpful when deployed near you, and when attacking, smokes are more useful closer to the enemy. You have to consider how much visual area you're giving up when throwing a smoke versus the amount of visual area you're taking away from the enemy.

Might also consider using smoke somewhere else entirely as a distraction. That being said I stopped trying to use it. Last time was on that map with the ship as C in the middle, when my entire squad was to that far side beach and making no effort to push up but hiding behind the rocks only doing sniper work. No point in using smoke then, at least when trying to directly cross that beach-y area to the ship. It has zero cover for miles wide and a single person can't drop enough smoke to cover that distance well enough to make a push.

I had also considered to play medic and revive people with smoke drops. Because too often I see everyone get rushed by enemies when everyone is in bandage, revival and heal mode. But... that might actually help enemies in rushing those near-dead and put them dead-dead. So better don't do that I guess.

Ive seen smokes used to great effect- not doubting most players dont know what to do when a smoke gets popped, but that being said, I've had some very fun interactions on 127v127 where both teams pop their smokes at the same time and the entire battlefield is a white mist.

True. I often miss my frag nades when I'm gearing smoke. Maybe I'll try it again regardless, just to create some chaos and get some people out of their comfort zone. I'm engineer or assault most of the time, the latter for the grappling hook. I like examining the verticality a bit, and it might make for interesting situations with the smoke nade launcher. Also maybe playing support and blindfiring an LMG into smoke is an idea? But you mentioned the tracers, your position is gonna be revealed too, so double-edged sword.

Ive been running smokes on support and found it really engaging to think about deploying them beforehand. I use the L83 on double fire mode and my favorite move is to throw three smokes in a line and cover an entire street with smoke, then post up in a building on the third floor.
