If you are having issues with them, just keep at it, they require a few mods before they really start to shine.
I have unlocked nearly all the mods on the gun no 4 and all of them on the saw. I camp 90% of the time but they are no where near as accurate as the assault rifles and just cant get enough bullets in before you die to smgs.
Sometimes, you need to partner up with someone, having two guns on target helps. Or a medic for heals, aside from bandages. Even if they drop ya a medkit it helps.
I have learned, if you are shooting from a window above them, and they start firing back, just prone. And get out of that room, as a grenade will be in shortly.

Like i would play support with assault rifles no problem because by the time ive killed q or 2 people im reloading anyway, so the mag does nothing but buy you 5 more seconds.

Even then, if you meet an enemy with an SMG/PDW and spot each other at about the same time, there is a good chance you'll die first. At ranges beyond 100m the SMGs and ARs will do better still. When I see a sniper glint at about !00~200m range, if I have a Groza on me, I'd dump the entire mag in the general direction and sometimes that'll take the sniper down. That same thing is much harder to do with an LMG and you have to do it in very short burst to even get a chance.
I wish LMGs with bipod with medium range optics were a viable option and that LMGs would function like an MG instead of overlapping with SMGs and ARs in terms of role.
For me they need to fix bipod 100%.
Ask a soldier if they can keep a clear head and steady aim while having 10 death deliverers a second slapping all around them
This game has nowhere near as good of a AC as warzone and yet that one is infested too so imagine how bad it is here.
I thought the patch was live and pulled like 350 kills from the ultimax in the last few days, same with the other mgs, you're supposed to cut people off as they wander through the open between objectives, although with your armor you still can win close gunfights
the usefulness of support is partially utilizing your ability to throw 12 grenades per life potentially at chokepoints, and then the other duties I already listed, you aren't supposed to do 360 noscopes, camp in buildings, shoot people as they funnel into control points, and when people are congested spam grenades
I also like to set an absolute ton of ap mines, very underrated and I think it works well with support playstyle, although trophy system might be better after patch, I think many more people will run it then though so ap mine will still be a good option
with all of this said the mg36 and 249 still aren't even bad in close range fights, the ttk is good, you just have to adjust your playstyle to watching angles and not sprinting around everywhere, you move slower but that doesn't stop you from outgunning and lean peaking people in close quarters
