Optimal recon sniper setup?
I really like recon and have started to get good at sniping long range. Can't help but feel like the other snipers I get into duels with long range have a much easier time getting me than me getting them. Like, for example, I was playing on a map the other day and saw a sniper all the way up on the opposite side mountain at at least 1k meters away. I took a few shots at him but missed bad because of how far away it was. I saw his scope glare and then I was dead. It was the first shot. I was in awe.

I'm sure that much of it is "git gud", but I'd like to hear about the way you other recon players set up your sniper rifles. What's optimal? Does the difference between the 8x, 15x, and up scopes matter? What about the best sniper rifle? I'm still using the first one. Is this "range finder" I see as a future unlockable make it easier to hit people really far away and predict the bullet drop?

Use a better rifle and there is far less drop. so the range finder can almost be useless on some rifles.

Use a 4X scope, Auto Bolt, Ranger barrel attachment and the Range finder.
Use Alt+Scroll to adjust your range also.

Doing this will give you max bullet velocity, quick follow up shots and no scope glint.
Happy huntin'

I've tried looking into the Alt+Scroll thing for zeroing in but didn't really get it. Could you elaborate on exactly what it does?

zeroing your scope, allows you to sdjust where the dot on your scope is. So if the enemy is 1000 yards away, you zero to 1000 yards, and not the red or black bullseye on your scope will hit the enemy now, rather than countering distance by aiming higher.

Oh wow, this is cool! Now, does this only work with certain sniper scopes or all of them? I appreciate it!

You should be able to adjust range on any long range scope

I believe you can adjust it for any weapon, but unless you're really reaching out across the map it isn't going to matter.

If you're struggling to hit people at range and don't zero your scope, this is why they always get you before you get them.

Before you have the rangefinder unlocked, use your distance to the nearest control point to gauge how far you are from things. When you look towards a control point it will tell you the distance to it. So if you see an enemy way across the map that you want to shoot, duck into cover, look at your map and figure out roughly how far you are from the control point and him. If it says you're 200m from the control point, and you think he's twice as far from you as you are from the point, then adjust your scope zero to 400 and see how that takes you.

Also note that the base sniper I think only lets you zero to 500m, whereas the later unlocks allow you to zero much further out. The M200 sniper also has significantly higher velocity than the other rifles, so once you get that you're going to have to worry less about leading moving targets, and your bullets will travel much faster in general, giving any high ranked snipers a decent, but not unstoppable, advantage.

Range finder is basically necessary for long range shots
The starter rifle can only zero up to 500 meters, I would recommend leveling up till you get the second rifle then start getting the attachments
Personally I use 15x scope as I can see people at distance clearly while still able to actually tell where I am aiming at when aiming at closer ranges
The bipod completely removes scope swag when it is set up, such as when you are at prone
Different barrel attachment can increase you rifle's bullet velocity, making distance shots easier, I think Ranger is the only one that increase velocity by 10%

I appreciate this. I'm about to be unlocking the second rifle soon at rank 30. I'm looking forward to it.

Rangefinder doesn’t affect glare. Your sniper will have glare if scope zoom is over 4x (basically all the long range scopes have glare, medium range scopes do not)
