Brickochet is greatly inspired by DX Ball, so you might call it a spiritual successor. Over time, I hope to add more features to the game, as well as music, levels, and so on.

But eveyone's feedback is what matters most to the game's development. So if you or anyone else has ideas for Brickochet's improvement, I'd look forward to checking them out. Thanks for posting!

GameMaker: Studio. I recommend it. But you may want GameMaker: Studio 2 because the first one doesn't have a store page on Steam anymore.

Awesome job Graham! When I try out the various game makers, I always try and do a breakout type game. Yours far surpasses anything I've ever done.

Ooh I had forgotten about DX Ball. That name takes me back lol.

Go on, I suppose £1.79 isn't even the price of half a pint of beer these days. I'll try it.

*£1.99 even*

Thank you so much! Funny thing is, I acutally tried to make a breakout game back in 2009 on GameMaker 7. It was my first time using a game making program, so the ball only bounced from a couple specific angles, making it very difficult to destroy all the bricks on screen. Fortunately there are many more resources and tutorials to help people out than before. My initial basis for this game came from the tutorials from GhazWorks on Youtube. Check them out if you like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfzShcq6x64

I find Brickochet much more similar to Amiga's MegaBall than DX Ball or WinBrick. The brick types are exactly the same and graphics are very alike to MegaBall's.
Not that I complain, my mother will be thrilled to play this since all our Amigas are currently out of order.

Well, DX Ball was inspired by MegaBall, and Brickochet is inspired by DX Ball, so there's bound to be similarities. I've watched some of MegaBall, but never actually played it. There are two things that were specifically derived from MegaBall, however. Level 44 in Brickochet is very similar to Board 01 in MegaBall. And I got the idea of the paddle warping when a level is finished because of MegaBall. Perhaps I'll play it sometime!

Well, I think this is a fine start. It really does bring me back to the Megaball days, and the icons are even the same. Are those public domain? Just curious.

Anyway, while playing this, some ideas came to me about new features, or new games and then I gave up on that line of thought because what it comes down to is this: This is a good learning project, but I hope you push this in a new direction. I mean, when it comes to Arkanoid clones, take a look at Super DX-Ball by BlitWise: http://www.blitwise.com/superdxb.html

You can see this has been done extensively. Although I do wish he'd "stoop" to putting his game on Steam. :dumbfounded:

Anyway, look at Welch's game for more inspiration if you like. But then I suggest also looking at WizOrb (super creative and also on discount right now!), Shatter (beautiful game), Ionball 2, EM: Shader Attack, and Simple Ball: Extended Edition. Take a look too at Rollers of the Realm. It's a Pinball game with some RPG mixed in. Again, super creative and a nice example of good production values combined with some new game mechanics that simply haven't been attempted before.

I know what you're working on here is intended to be simple and a nostalgia piece, but I just felt compelled to suggest bringing the genre in a new direction as well. You could make something that is truly the first of its kind. :oneofakindo:

Or you know.. do that thing that Welch did too, and then milk our wallets for all they're worth with oodles of level packs. Either way, I think we'll be happy. ;)

Cheers!

I'd also suggest looking at Break Quest. My fauvorite arkanoid. It's free now - I payed for it long time ago and I'd pay again, its amazing.

Hmm... where did you get your copy? I can't find a working download link.

Edit: Never mind, I found it!

There's a 20th Anniversary Edition of DX-Ball 2 on steam by the original Longbow Games (RIP Seumas McNally).
