The design is very intentional.
I personally love and prefer the SimCity 4 style of graphics or the buildings from Concrete Jungle (they are amazing). But its the same as with everything. The Dev cant please every persons preference, so he took a thoughtfull approach to have his own style.
Which is fine in my book as even when its not my prefered style it at least is good looking and coherent.
Personally, I think the look of the game is quite adequate. However, the areas with trees I have problems with. I can rarely see even a building's access road when I'm trying to plant a new building in forest. And trying to diagnose a break in a railroad line in forest is a complete toss of the dice. I usually have to waste money just guessing where the break is, and rerouting rails in crossed-finger hopes that I've connected the break.
I tend to avoid developing areas with forest when I can. :(
