Poor Gamepad Controller Settings
There is only one adjustment for the steering and that's the sensitivity. This leaves you with a sudden whipping sensation while trying to turn into corners if the sensitivity is over a certain amount, but also leaving you going into the wall when you get just touched by another car or pulled by the draft for the lack of driver reaction when the setting is low. I don't understand with all the racing games out these days how there could be such a lack of care when it comes to actually making the game accessible fo the control platforms that they have. Just before this game came out I went back to Nascar 15 because for some practice because I remembered how I like the controls on the controller and the wheel but the drivers like to jump all over the track randomly. There were multiple settings that affected the steering on the gamepad the most noticable was steering linearity. That effectively eliminated the whipping sensation when you go into turns because if adjusted properly would give you a true 1 to 1 feel of what you were inputing to the gamepad. Now it's all simplified down to one slider with one type of sensitivity that causes your car to whip uncontrollably at the slightest input on the joystick or not have the sensitivity to counteract any of the slightest mistakes.

The next issue I have is the lack of controller customization overall. You literally cannot re-map a single button on your controller at all. This makes it very difficult to race properly for people like me where I always invert the bumbers so I can accelerate and gear up at the same time or brake and gear down. Please fix your game and get it on par with todays sim racers you have a beautiful handling model in this game but you are not focusing in the areas it's severely lacking. I'm sad to say I just purchased this game but till I have my racing wheel back I will be sticking to Nascar 15. Unplayable on the game pad.

I have figured out a fix for the gamepad steering issue that makes the driving smoother but it's still not too terribly convenient. When racing put the sensativity to full and hold the thumbstick forward at all times to eliminate deadzone. From there treat the thumbsticks rotation as the steering wheel rotation. I just placed 2nd in the Daytona 500 full race like that I had a much easier time holding lines and avoiding bumps.

I was having a deadzone issue on my G920 wheel and was able to fix it by creating a device profile. I just tried this out with Xbox One controller and it works to get the "Configure Controllers" app to allow you to adjust settings on the controller.

It should work with Xbox 360 controller and probably more as well, but you would have to find the "DeviceId" of your particular controller. The following is setting up a Xbox One controller.

Navigate to C:\Users\**your user name**\NASCAR Heat 2

Inside this folder should be a single folder named "SaveData".

Create a new folder and name it "ControllerProfiles" without the quotes.

In the NASCAR Heat 2 folder you should now have two folders: "SaveData" and "ControllerProfiles"

Inside the "ControllerProfiles" folder create a new text file and name it
"Controller (Xbox One For Windows).deviceprofile.txt" without the quotes.

Copy and Paste the following into the text file you just created and save the file.
You should now be able to run the Configure Controllers app and assign all the buttons and adjust deadzones.

I appreciate this so much. When I open the config tool though it tells me my device is already configured and forces me to close the box.

I just used this for my Xbox One controller. The steering now works perfectly! Thanks so much. But... there is a major issue. I can run the Controller Config, and remap buttons. Once in the game though, it uses the default settings + my changes. So for instance, i set X to Downshift. It works, but also switches views. Tried setting Up/Downshift to the right analog stick, but it wont work. Am now testing using the analog buttons for shifting. Will see how that works.

Thanks so much for this Willy Shawn, having the steering is fixed is a win.

How do you get the config tool to open? It keeps telling me that device is already config'd and won't let me go further.

Is your controller an Xbox One controller?

Did you follow that guide and create the folder and text file in the correct locations?
Make sure the the text file you create is exactly the same as the guide.

That's the only reasons I can think that it's not working for you. I've tried it on my wheel and xbox one controller, and tried it on two different computers. It has worked every time.

Make sure the .txt file is in the proper folder, and is named correctly. Mine is located here:

C:\Users\Brian\NASCAR Heat 2\ControllerProfiles

The name of the file is: Controller (Xbox One For Windows).deviceprofile

C:\Users\Brian\NASCAR Heat 2\ControllerProfiles\Controller (Xbox One For Windows).deviceprofile.txt

You can't really change any buttons anyways. The game will still use the default controls no matter what you do. I've managed to change Shift Up & Down to the analog stick buttons, and that works, as those aren't used by default. But it is quite hard to downshift while steering using that.

The main thing, is the steering is now fixed. All you need to do is place that file with what Willy Shawn posted... and the steering will be fixed without opening the Controller Config program. It would be great if we could actually change the buttons without the game using the default ones too. The steering fix is great though, such a big change.

Try testing the game once you have the file placed there... try the steering. If its better, the file is working. You can edit the file without needing the Config Program. You can set buttons by typing them. It looks like this:

"
Control: Accept/Race Info (A)
Source: Button5
End Control

Control: Cancel/Car Info (B)
Source: Button1
End Control
"

@Willy Shawn

Can you remap the buttons on your controller without the game also using the default settings? That's my only problem. The steering fix works great though. Thanks again for posting this.

I actually just tried remapping buttons and got the same result you did. I didn't try it before because I was just trying to adjust deadzones.

OK, thanks man. Glad to know it's not just me. Will keep trying stuff, maybe remapping the gear changes to the d-pad if possible.

I have been able to successfully remap buttons using Steam's Xbox Controller Configuration and it works everytime. Steam's configuration also allows you to adjust deadzones and anti-deadzones on the Xbox One controller so there would be no need to use Nascar Heat's configure controllers app if using an Xbox One controller.

Here are the Nascar Heat 2 keyboard shortcuts to help with the remapping.

Xbox Right Trigger - "CTRL"
Xbox Left Trigger - "ALT"
Xbox Right Bumper - "Page Down"
Xbox Left Bumper - "Page Up"

Xbox A button - "A key" or "ENTER" or "Keypad ENTER"
Xbox B button - "B key" or "ESCAPE" or "Keypad +"
Xbox X button - "X key" or "SPACE BAR" or "Keypad / "
Xbox Y button - "Y key" or "Keypad * "

Xbox Start button - "F1" or "Pause key" or "Keypad - "

Wow that's great man. I found a program called reWASD for remapping buttons on an Xbox controller. I'm using it for gear changes. I push up on the right analog stick to shift up, and down for down shifting. Works perfect... exactly what i was looking for. Will check out the Steam stuff... i didn't even know that existed.
