So you can get light from killing hostile monsters and also from tower ruins.
Tower ruins are a great option if you don't want to fight/kill anything, and you can also get quite a bit of light from some towers because they can be quite tall.
Look for really tall structures made from stone that appear to be only halfway constructed. You can also usually see points of light (the light globes) from a pretty good distance, when approaching Tower Ruins.

Good luck. 🍀
(EDIT: Screenshot)
Souls seems simplistic. You don't gather these light to basically 'be a holy warrior'... You use this resource to craft enchantments and stuff. You get 'light' from hostile animals and monsters, so it makes sense that it's more like 'essence' or 'soul'.
First, you need the 'Light' resource (described above) in order to create a light enchantment (which may be socketed into a piece of player equippable gear after you've crafted it).
'Light' is the only crafting 'ingredient' you'll need to create this enchantment.
Then, you need an Enchanting Table to make the enchantment. You'll be able to unlock the Enchanting Table recipe (under Skills \ Crafting \ Masonry) after you've leveled up your masonry skill.
To make the actual enchantment once you have everything you need, refer to the screenshots below.

Good luck. 🍀
It's not necessary to put your weapons on the hotbar. (I've never tried it and I'm not even sure it's supposed to work that way.)
First, make sure your character's sword (and shield, if one is being used) and bow are equipped in the weapon slots on the Adventuring tab of their inventory screen.
Note: you can use 'C' to toggle between weapon swap-outs. (Looks like I've changed mine to 'W' at some point.)
Then, there's a 'Basic Attack' button that you can drag from Skills / General to your hotbar, but I've never used it.
Instead, I just attack monsters by clicking my Left mouse button (either from melee range, or from a distance if I'm using a bow).
Give it a try - it's always worked for me.
(And also, remember that you don't have to fight in order to obtain the Light resource. If you've got harvested timber and/or stone to build stairs with, you can find one of those Tower Ruins to harvest Light globes from. No fighting involved.)
What you need to do is this: move the actual weapon(s) from your character's main inventory to the weapon slot(s) on the adventuring tab (the panel to the left, and in the lower right-hand corner).
That's it - that's all there is to it.
Equipping weapons (or a shield) in Solace Crafting doesn't involve the use 'hotbars' at all. (At least it never has for me, and I've played this game a lot.)
If you've somehow managed to drag the weapons ONTO your hotbar, then try dragging them back, one at a time, into your character's main inventory.
I don't know what else to suggest.
(EDIT: spelling/grammar, 'cause I'm persnickety like that 😋)
