Silken Thread

Hi. I have enough spider silk to make the underwear, but I can't figure out how to make it into thread. the retting vat doesn't seem to work. Anyone know?

Sorry for the delay in answering your question.
Just checking- have you clicked on the reaper NPC and learned the silken thread recipe?
When you have done that the crafting recipe for silk thread should be in the tailoring crafting tab.
Pretty sure you will need to be near a tailoring station when you craft the underwear.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I was wondering where spider silk can be found?

I haven't found any spiders so far in 180 hours of playing. Is it only in beta or are there some biomes I haven't found yet. I have only skimmed past the swamps but searched mountains snow and grassland quite thoroughly.

The spiders are found only in the grassland areas, such as the one at the spawn site. However, you are looking for a spider nest icon that will show up on the map. There are several on each map but you will need to move away from the start, almost certainly.
When you find a spiders nest node you need to build a warehouse first and then the NPC reaper building that will harvest the spider silk. Make sure that you assign it to silk thread rather than just thread.
As mentioned above- you need to learn the silken thread recipe from the NPC and then craft silken thread from the tailor. After that, your silk thread undies will protect you in both floating islands and lava chambers.

Thanks torac ... guess I'll have to keep looking.

I've wandered quite extensively from the starting area through T0 to T4 areas sailing across exceptionally large waterways and have investigated most icons I have come across. All in the 20km radius from the start.
So far I have found ~12 coal mines 5 or 6 limestone icons and 3 of the scale bug icons in the desert; but nothing that is different for spider silk. I have tried finding bigger grassland areas but seem to mainly get mountains snow and desert.

Would be good to have a legend showing what the icons look like. I know I avoided the scale bug icon at first as I thought it looked like a giant bear. Felt it must be a boss bear to fight when I'm stronger.

I'm not certain, but I know one of the guys on Discord has been extensively updating the Wiki with icons. He may well have included the map icons too.
