Game stuck on "verifying login server"

Never had this issue before, friend is actively playing the game rn and every time I try launching (have tried verifying files, restarting steam) I get a message saying it's stuck trying to verify the login server, times out, and then gives me the option to retry or play offline. What happen? First issue I've ever had with Mecha :c

Resurrecting this to gripe about the same thing because I can't play AGAIN after patching the game
