research unlock is a mistake
New players are going to be frustrated that they lose to someone who has unlocked the things they wanted themselves, having to play for several hours being bashed is not a good on boarding, it is gate keeping.

Imagine having to unlock unit mods in a competitive multiplayer game... Pretty bad idea, what comes next? Pay 5$ extra to unlock the units and or modifications? What about upgrade lootboxes?

Yeah the change is weak, should be cosmetics only.

I could have won the game I just played with my perks (13 rounds + game crash in the end), instead of standard ones, but I need to grind the perks like a noob, it rather annoying, than helping people to get familiar with the game step by step. Is this a kindergarden or smth?

upd

Well I'm lvl 11 and I took all the perks needed, so actually it's not a bad thing I guess, It took me like an hour maybe? So I change my opinion back, it's not a bad thing.

Progression in a multiplayer game is ever a bad idea.
Its an ok way to control balance in a singleplayer game or cooperative game, but its a bad bottleneck for players in multiplayer versus games.
But well, gonna keep grinding.

To be honest, I only needed 3 unlocks to get my old build back, so no complaints from my side.

I disagree, truly new players do have other problems than fiddling with extra abilities. Since they only need about 20 hours to unlock everything and since there aren't that many useful abilities locked, this is a non-issue. By the time the they know the basics well enough to try their hand on customizing unit abilities, they will already have enough points to unlock everything they need.

I could live without progression charts like that but that's how modern games work and what modern "gamers" demand. They need constant gratification, no matter how superficial it is. And I'd say: Better some harmless progression like this than having to grind for essentials.

GUYS, I played 5 Games and had Fun, Got like 5-7 TechPoints.

Unlocked all the Skills i wanted.

Where is the Problem? Its not like we only get the bad Skills, all skills a kinda viable for a strat.

You guys are Whining before playing it seems.

There are 42 unlocks, the more you get the harder it becomes to get the rest. devs has stated that on average you'll get one every 45 minutes.
If you are new, you have no idea which ability you need, you might know because you played beta, but others don't, and they do not have the option to try before they buy.

Have you ever played challenges? Because the harder ones mostly consist of "If you play with these skills and unit unlocks, you deserve the lose"

I really don't want to sit through that for 20 hours.

To be fair, no i havent, i spent all my time in PVP since i disliked the PVE and see it as a entrance for newbies for learning the game.

PVP is the focus, and i can only take 4 skills which you can change with 1-4 others kills depending on the Unit.

I dislike the Unlock Mechanic too, but i can see the need for Beginner to not get overloaded with Stuff. For my part i unlocked all i wanted. And now i just play the game.

Progression is an incredibly powerful and motivating tool to keep people playing a game regardless of the genre. It's why you have it in every game now from FPS to sports to racing to ping pong simulators.
UnknownAl May 12, 2023 @ 4:35am
true that progression is a form of motivation, but it's pvp game, you shouldn't have a disadvantage just because you didn't play as long enough, besides there is skin unlocked after you unlocked the research.

and honestly, anyone who thinks beginners should be held by the hand haven't experienced how annoying it is. Try and imagine that you know little to nothing about the units, and can't try the abilities, and so you have to just randomly guess which one you might like.

The unlock system is a pretty useless feature indeed but honestly i only needed 3 games to get 5 research points which was enough to get all my normal builds. The default upgrades are actually quite good. The only really important thing missing is the elite marksman on marksman.
UnknownAl May 12, 2023 @ 6:03am
again: 'your build' is because you had the chance to test it, new players don't have the luxury of knowing what they want to unlock.

Yeah, it's kinda bad to double tax newbs with less experience with actual power disadvantage.
