Is there any decent abyss counters?
So, i'm clearly missing something..

I have googled this question, and every resource i can find either doesn't list a counter at all, or is a video, and i just wanna read something, as i'm old and watching stuff doesn;t appeal to me..

However i keep reading that 'the abyss is a miss'. Well i just came across someone who spawned 4 of them on me by mid game. Fair play.. s/he smashed me..

The only counter i can think of is snipers with AA and range, sadly i was playing an assault build at the time

Are there any other units, or combos that counter a decent level Abyss?

melting points, phoenix with charge shot (even after nerf), literally any emp application to them, aa wasps (if they are lvld), overlords if you can get them to connect, stangs with aa (if they are lvld), worms with aa (more of a meme but they work surprisingly well against abyss)

also dunno what you mean by "decent lvl abyss" its already such an expensive unit that most often the abyss will be lvl 1 or 2, rare to see lvls beyond that unless you let it farm

Ok, thanks. I assumed long range (eg. out-ranging the laser) would be a good idea. or something that could get close enough to do decent damage (worms). EMP is a good idea, i didn;t think to try that!

When i say 'decent leveled' i meant lvl 2/3ish where it does good damage, and a swipe of the laser takes out most medium units.

I guess my issue was that my units were getting wiped before they were within range to hit them for long enough to do damage.

Does speed give much of a bonus? similar to storms? or is the laser to quick to beat?

I probably didn;t react to them quick enough tbh, which is why they managed to farm me enough to lvl up.
if you see one, instantly deploy counter measures, there will probably be at least 1 more

yes speed is a great counter for it too cuz the laser is actually quite slow and starts far to the left of the target its aiming at. a pack of crawlers can manage to dodge the laser if they are running towards it (assuming they dont die to chaff clear) and will make it waste alot of time. harder to use speed on other units though because once they get in range they stop to attack making them easy targets.

If his opponent suddenly goes 4 Abyss, by mid game and then levels them up, then I think its safe to assume chaff superiority, if not then its the bigger issue that must be fixed first. When you have chaff, Abyss will waste a lot of time on them, personally I think that by mid game you should be ready to counter some amount of air, so invest in anything with such capability by round 4, if you havent earlier. Anyway, if you have chaff superiority and counter with MP, then they should connect quickly, while Abyss will be bussy clearing chaff. If you have marksmen already, then just buy more, give them range, AA, EMP. If leveled, they should make short work of Abyss, mustangs can help too, as they clear chaff for others, and then can still help with Abyss, if you have a lot of them, like 3-4 per Abyss and ideally they are lvl 2, they can even take care of this by themselfs

Have you ever watched an abyss try to shoot crawlers? It's a very sad affair. You might not be building enough chaff which encourages people to go into abyss. Abyss are also god awful at killing sandworms and Rank 2+ sledgehammers with field maintenance.

There are plenty of units that are good at killing abyss. The trouble is an abyss will pretty much one shot all of those units if it gets a lock so the key is making sure whatever abyss killing units you have are protected.

Would a fang swarm work? or are they too slow?

I get the crawlers as chaff.. but i tend to find my self against abyss later, when i cant build enough chaff quick enough.. and as crawlers dont do AA they are only a distraction..

i should add i'm a bit of a noob still, so still trying to work this game out..

appreciate your answers so far..i feel i'm learning something.. tnx

Yeah, tbh io was running an assualt build, which did have a huge impact..

I did try to swarm on the flanks, but i think i probbaly left it too late.

reaction is clearly a key to this.
hence my wanting to learn..

many thanks

fangs with ignite can do a bunch of damage and eventually kill it but itll take a while and thats assuming they dont all die before then. Abyss has too much hp for fangs to really chip through unless they are very leveled (like 5+) and even then they struggle

So..

What would you recommend?

Lets say its round 5, they drop an abyss..

i have to react, and have little to counter already

round 6 they drop a 2nd abyss..

what would you guys suggest i try (appreciate there is a bit of RNG)

Should i try spamming chaff? or are there ♥♥♥♥♥♥ hitters i should think about using?

I almost feel like there should be some kind of single target inferno type unit, like the balls/spheres, but flying.. (AOE would be OP) but it would need good range..

any thoughts? are there flyers that would do the job? wasp spam maybe?

kinda depends on what you have on the field yourself, but generally its pretty "safe" to just buy a melter and tech range (so it doesnt randomly die to anything). having one melting point on field will prob deter another abyss from being placed. Or if you happen to have any units already from my first comment go into them.

and you didnt say "heavy" hitters, you said N hitters (we can see it in the quote) which is why its censored

Sniper with AA tech and double shot tech. Void Eye spam... list goes on.

Idk what exactly you would want round 5, depends on how the rest of the board looks. But in most games you are going to want 1-3 melters with range and/or absorb + chaffclear at some point. Until then fangs is the best bet, and all kinds of chaff to setup for the lategame. If you are air then overlords can be an ok substitute for melters.

ngl it is an odd thing to claim lol also considering heavy doesnt have 6 letters as well

i use the abyss quite frequently and the best counters against it have honestly been shielded units and quantity of units and overlords have better luck then melters.
and also just as a genreal rule always have some single target damage available dont wait till you need to counter. round 2-3 is a good round to get some pheonix's or something similar out without needing to worry about losing a round.

then you are prepared to deal with stuff like an abyss dropping
