RTS genre is pretty dead. Killed off by moba's, 4X, and autobattlers

You could just play the direct strike map on SC2. Similar autobattler and arguably more depth because of the commanders plus the unit and mechanic diversity.

Only one not dead really is BAR, SCFA (to a small extent), and probably that upcoming one that looks like a spiritual successor to SCFA and not whatever SC2 was.

Edit; That last one is called Sanctuary: Shattered Sun. 100% going to throw money at it when it comes out. Possibly even SSO2 as well if it lives up to the hype.

I mean all of the age of empires are also still a thing.

Moba's and 4x totally right... but what about autobattlers? I literally don't really know too much or any good autobattlers outside of Mechabellum and some Lol mode... I played Red Tides several years ago, but even that one was mediocre. Autobattlers are mostly mobile games, and those could not really hurt the rts genre.

I would say, rts genre was blooming in the Era of single player games. They were just as succesful , as any other genre in the early 2000s.... but as the multiplayer games came, and shooters / mobas / survival games appeared, playing a real strategy game (long, need a brain, not that intense, fast, and u cannot play with tons of people) just become an extinct race.

However, mechabellum is more like a turn-based tactical combat game for me. I dont really feel it as an "autobattler" becouse the real actions happens between "cinematics", so its more a turn based game.

RTS games have had a pretty substantial revival recently though. Age empires 2 definitive edition has 16,000 players on steam right now. AOE 4 has 6k.

Sadly they probly won’t ever recover to the same level of popularity they once had because the gaming market/demographics have shifted away, but there’s still notable success in recent years. Hopefully Homeworld 3 has a decent multiplayer playerbase when it releases.

Look up Stormgate. It's being developed by a lot of the same devs that made starcraft 2/brood war/warcraft 3.

Whats wrong with it being an auto battler?

This game actually is made because of a Starcraft mod called "DirectStrike" beeing its original predecessor.

It wants to be an autobattler. I understand the love for RTS but asking a game to change the genre is pretty silly. For example I won't ask the Counterstrike devs to make it turn based.

If you love both RTS and the units of Mechabellum I would recommend:

* Supreme Commander (use the community made Forged Alliance Forever mod/portal, it's the only real way to play it)
*Ashes of Singularity: Escalation
* Beyond All Reason

What makes this game great is the fact that it brings the strategy aspects of an RTS without actually requiring APM to be competitive. I loved Warcraft/Starcraft/Supreme Commander back in the day. But at a certain point the intensity of having to do APM all the time was a limiting factor for me.

They are not even remotely dead they were niche to begin with. No one is interested in playing a game that is so old. If the next starcraft comes along you think it's not going to sell well for some odd reason despite the sales that the remake of the original had 😂 The game is old, of course people stopped playing it like that and the esports scene is still going strong.

That being said, no, this game does not need to be an RTS.
