Edit; That last one is called Sanctuary: Shattered Sun. 100% going to throw money at it when it comes out. Possibly even SSO2 as well if it lives up to the hype.
Moba's and 4x totally right... but what about autobattlers? I literally don't really know too much or any good autobattlers outside of Mechabellum and some Lol mode... I played Red Tides several years ago, but even that one was mediocre. Autobattlers are mostly mobile games, and those could not really hurt the rts genre.
I would say, rts genre was blooming in the Era of single player games. They were just as succesful , as any other genre in the early 2000s.... but as the multiplayer games came, and shooters / mobas / survival games appeared, playing a real strategy game (long, need a brain, not that intense, fast, and u cannot play with tons of people) just become an extinct race.
However, mechabellum is more like a turn-based tactical combat game for me. I dont really feel it as an "autobattler" becouse the real actions happens between "cinematics", so its more a turn based game.
Sadly they probly won’t ever recover to the same level of popularity they once had because the gaming market/demographics have shifted away, but there’s still notable success in recent years. Hopefully Homeworld 3 has a decent multiplayer playerbase when it releases.
If you love both RTS and the units of Mechabellum I would recommend:
* Supreme Commander (use the community made Forged Alliance Forever mod/portal, it's the only real way to play it)
*Ashes of Singularity: Escalation
* Beyond All Reason
They are not even remotely dead they were niche to begin with. No one is interested in playing a game that is so old. If the next starcraft comes along you think it's not going to sell well for some odd reason despite the sales that the remake of the original had 😂 The game is old, of course people stopped playing it like that and the esports scene is still going strong.
That being said, no, this game does not need to be an RTS.
