Rounds 3, and 6-10 are 'boss' waves. Whoever is in the lead on those waves will get a much stronger wave vs them generally using 'experimental' units (who have much stronger abilities, but also a timed life mechanic). They also give more $$.
The boss waves are pretty much a catch-up mechanic for the other players and it sounds as though thats whats happening in your matches.
You might also just get unlucky; the FFA AI is pretty bad about sometimes sending players multiple rounds of hard counters while opponents may get multiple rounds of units that THEY hard counter.
Yes, but now they're so strong that you want to avoid first place like the plague (or at least the wave) unless you have overwhelming dominance.
Now the game mode has a fair amount of RNG sometimes the AI just screws you round after round, but that is part of the fun.
I always try to build my army in such a way that it is never at the top, but still doesn't get left behind by the other players. Then I wait for the right moment to upgrade the army with key units or techs and decide everything in my favor in one round.
I'm doing pretty well with that and it's currently got me to about 1150 MMR. Sure, it's not the best level, but it's not a beginner's level anymore either.
