When would you buy a wraith over an overlord?
I do not understand the niche of this unit... 100 cheaper than an overlord but no range and not that tanky without expensive upgrades. The AoE aura is OK but should be built into the unit not a tech choice.

they could be handy supporting flanks where usually units are close enough to be in the range of the debuff. makes up for the short attack range was well and its chaff clearing power will kinda force the opponent too shield up in the backline. and if they dont already have marks with AA or levelled mustangs will make the opponent need to invest in tech and or new units to counter a single unit.

is my on the spot untested theroy i should add. i played with them a bit and i found they were kinda ass. even with items like the extra range damage or health.

When you are up against aggro play. AoE aura is the worst of the 4 standard techs IMO.
If you face steelball/mustang aggro 2-4 wraits are godly beasts.

I've only used wraiths for their debuff, everything else is kind of a joke

Wraith is an OP Unith. Didn´t you recognize that yet ? :)

The aura being a choice actually makes sense as otherwise this would just do too much and you could have 4 combat options AND it debuffs.

The debuff aura can be good depending on what you are playing against. Two wraiths with the degen tech can cover far more area than you can protect with three boats with photon coating. That makes the degen tech "worth" having as an option.

The problem with the Wraith is that the range is insanely too low. The range tech should be removed and built in for the Wraith. Compare the Scorpion to the Wraith and you will notice the Scorpion has "ok" range and then can have a range upgrade (not even considering arty mode).

Overall the Scorpion as anti aggro just seems better than the Wraith.

Thank you everyone for the thoughts!

Rate of fire is better on the Wraith, and the Overlord tech that brings it in line with base Wraith reduces its range to a similar distance. IMHO the Overlord is good at supporting your mainline while the Wraith is better at supporting an anchor.

Difference is the Scorpion can't shoot at air units, and the Wraith is an air unit that can't be targeted by quite a few units.

Mostly use wraiths to defend against massed trash at the flanks since it gets armor.
Sometimes use it to punish over aggressive players who put most of their units right at the front of their board since wraith have a huge debuff aura.
Decent enough at stalling enemy wasp/fang/mustang pressure.

I would personally never let an overlord be at the front barring jump drive overlords doing mobile beacon shenanigans.

The wraith fills the role of the old tanker overlord. And it's way cheaper to buy and to level up.

After some testing I found some use for the unit. If you win the fight but your opponent plays more tanks causing you to lose than the debuff is pretty good. If your opponents plays fangs (without burn effect) or mustangs than the unit is pretty good as firesupport it will tank for other air units and support ground units placement is crutial here if your opponent reacts with air himself wasps are a generally good pick. The unit is very good in destroying ground units quickly and may be used simmilar to a wasp to surprise the opponent forcing other replys than the wasp. A wasp supprise forces mustangs or fangs a wraith forces phoenix Overloard leveled Marksman or Meltinpoint. You should never play the unit befor round 4 or withour a reason since the cost is too high and it is a highly technical unit. You should not spamm the unit in great mass and only by tech upgrades very sparingly.

The unit generally performs best on the flanks simmilar to mustangs.

Bruh I was so confused because I played a lot of starcraft and thought you were talking about wasps not wraiths. LMAO now it makes sense.

It's a flying tank, the only one in the game. Yes you can make overlords tanky as well BUT they reside in the back, this one in the front) That's it's niche. It flies and protects flying units behind it. It can (mostly) only be stopped by marksmen or mp. This gives place for other units to shine while the wraith is tanking.

Flying gets destroyed by mustangs but mustangs get destroyed by wraith.

In my opinion the wraith is much more viable then the scorpion.

Hope this helped.

This is very good unit, especially if you can punish enemy in good moment and level it up in 1 round. 1 fat Wraith will be enough problem for him to sort out for next 2 rounds while you focus on something else

wraith´s are surpisingly usefull in many situations. The degen beam also works on air units, so it can counter mustang spam or wasps. Also do they work wonderfull against steel balls. with the right placement, those things are truly wonderfull.
