The plan was always for the game to go F2P at release, and that was always stated on the store page. Charging for the early access version is a form of funding the development. The game didn't have any other monetization until the recent patch. Players who supported the game during the early access period will get otherwise obtainable rewards, so it's not quite the same as paying for beta testing.
I've gotten over 220 hours from this game so far. For the 15 euros I paid, this is an amazing deal. If that's not a good deal for you, waiting for the F2P release next year is fine too. I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing the game evolve, learning the new units as they got added, and just learning the game in general.
Also this game is certainly not the first that had a cost for Early Access when the end product was f2p. And yes it is a pretty bad practice if you ask me, but as you read on these forums there are white knights defending this practice and it seems to work well enough. So expect more developers to deploy it in the future.
And the easy solution: don't buy Early Access no matter if the end product is f2p or b2p or whatever model they use.
Thanks for this. I did not see that ♥♥♥♥ mentioned in any review and I generally don't buy EA games from the ♥♥♥♥ I've seen them pull. I had this on my wishlist without having looked very hard at it and it was 50% off. Played 10 minutes, came to look at the forums, uninstalled refund requested.
No F2P game like this won't immediately turn to a P2W ♥♥♥♥ show. I assume mobile trash is the actual intended audience.
The game won't be P2W. This has been explained, too. The "role models" for the monetization are games like LoL and DotA. You won't be able to buy anything other than skins and fluff.
The devs have been very transparent from the start. I suppose I understand the distrust in the gaming industry, but I don't feel it's deserved here.
