Some other things you can do:
-Make sure your VR headset's microphone is set as the "Default Device" in the WIndows OS
-Increase the volume of the VR Headset's microphone in the windows OS settings
Out of interest, what HMD are you using?
Original Vive.
All the sensitivies are set to High. The default recording device is set to the Vive mic, and speech recognition works for the initial "Open Console" when the game first starts.
But in-mission, no matter how much I say "Open Console" or "Freeze", nothing happens.
Try setting sensitivity to "Low". Espire Mike would know better, but I believe "High" means you have to talk really loud for it to register.
1) disconnect your Rift S. Plug it back in again. We find here in our studio that the Rift S can sometimes (once every 2 days) loose the Mic until you do this.
2) double check in your system settings that the Rift S mic is the default
3) check in the Oculus Settings that the mic is enabled
4) make sure you're playing the game using Oculus and NOT SteamVR. It's possible to have a Rift plugged in, but attempt to run Espire with SteamVR open. As a rift user, you dont want to use SteamVR with Espire.
If all that fails, you can press the X button on your Oculus Touch controller to do "Freeze" / "Open Console" commands. This is for users that may not want to use a Microphone (waking up younglings, etc).
In a future update we're going to list all the controller input mappings so this is clearer to players.
Hope some of this helps!
And now no matter how many times I restart the game, SteamVR or my computer, I can't even get past the initial "Open Console" prompt. Won't recognize voice, and won't let me click anything. Just plays sounds whenever I press a controller button. No pointer.
I'm thinking the game is unable to initialize speech recognition, and it doesn't allow continuing until it completes initializing that, meaning it waits forever.
