The original series has 8 arcs:

Question arcs:
  • "Onikakushi-hen"—"Demoned Away volume"
  • "Watanagashi-hen"—"Cotton [or Organ] Drifting volume"
  • "Tatarigoroshi-hen"—"Curse Killing volume"
  • "Himatsubushi-hen"—"Time Wasting volume" (note: there were originally supposed to be 3 question arcs, hence the credits at the end of "Tatarigoroshi-hen", but for certain reasons, like "Meakashi-hen" taking a while to finish and maybe other things, Ryukishi07 decided to release this in the meantime)

Answer arcs:
  • "Meakashi-hen"—"Eye Opening volume", answer to "Watanagashi-hen"
  • "Tsumihoroboshi-hen"—"Atonement volume", answer to "Onikakushi-hen"
  • "Minagoroshi-hen"—"Massacre volume"
  • "Matsuribayashi-hen"—"Festival [musical] Accompanying volume"

I watched anime long time ago so more or less i know the story but want to be sure. 1st season of anime included first 6 chapters from Onikakushi-hen to Tsumihoroboshi-hen. In 2nd season there is Massacre and Festival arc but also Awekening Misfortune chapter that you did not mention in ur list and after that theres 3rd season with Shame Exposing, Dice Killing and Daybreak chapter, how does it fit VN?

Stupid way to divide it, IMO. But I guess they didn't know if they'd get funding for a second season. Better to take it as far as possible in the first??? Still, they called the second season "Kai", which is the name for the answer arcs in the sound novels. You know, including those two arcs they put in the first season? Yeah...

but also Awekening Misfortune chapter that you did not mention in ur list
The list is for the sound novels, so those don't count. Also, they only added those to fill in critical information they left out of the first season.

Extra arcs that were released in various ways, including ports for PS2, PS3, DS, etc. "Dice Killing volume" ("Saikoroshi-hen") is from the "Rei" fandisc. "Shame Exposing [or Embarrassment] volume" ("Hajisarashi-hen") appears to be anime-only as well. Wikipedia has a list of story arcs from the sound novels[en.wikipedia.org] (beware of SPOILERS). The arcs for other media are listed elsewhere.

Is there any other work besides Higurashi and Umineko that happens in same "universe" ?
fllthdcrb Jun 14, 2018 @ 8:59am
Not that I know of. But that's not saying that much. I know Ryukishi07 has other works, one of which is called Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni, a title that sounds awfully similar to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Umineko no Naku Koro ni. But that one doesn't seem to be in the same universe, based on what I can find out about it quickly.

There's almost certainly fan fiction, though.

There are about two dozen official and semi-official (developed by Alchemist or another company) extra Higurashi arcs that aren’t in the core 8 as well.

Hou is the definitive official version of the game. It includes Rei, Outbreak, and Kamikanshi, as well as the predecessor work Hinamizawa Bus Stop. However, I don’t know if MG is going to include those arcs. Then Alchemist developed their Kizuna, Matsuri, and Sui ports which all included new arcs. These are official, but dubious in terms of canon. The Switch version of Hou will include all of what I’ve mentioned above, with Alchemist artwork.

The manga also includes at least one non-core arc focusing on a Kimiyoshi character. Again the canonicity is dubious.

When They Cry 5 is also confirmed to be in development, and it will probably be in the same universe. We have no clue what the content will be besides Ryukishi07 stating something along the lines of it having some form of open world.

I emailed MG a while ago and they said they would be translating the extra arcs from the Rei fandisc. So I hope this also includes the other ones in Hou hopefully.

And what's this about When They Cry 5? Are Umineko and Higanbana included as part of the When They Cry series?

Don't know about Higanbana (I think not, but maybe I'm mistaken), but Umineko no Naku Koro ni is. The "Naku Koro ni" part is what's translated as "When They Cry".

No. WTC1 and 2 are Higurashi and Higurashi Kai, 3 and 4 are Umineko and Umineko Chiru.

Trianthology is from the same universe. You could also argue that every 07th Expansion game takes place in the same universe, though. But only Trianthology is confirmed.

Honestly, the 'universe' doesn't really matter that much. This is no MCU lol. Just read what you want.

They're translating every arc included in the Hou release, so basically everything that Ryukishi wrote.

For a while now, many have wondered why Higurashi‘s release has been delayed, and today we’re excited to finally share that our acquisition of Higurashi Hou has been one of those reasons! This acquisition means that our upcoming release on Steam will be the definitive version of Higurashi both for Japan and the West! This also means that we’ll be releasing every single chapter of Higurashi contained in Hou: all four Question Arcs, all four Answer Arcs (Higurashi Kai), all three arcs of Higurashi Rei (which were previously never released in English!), Hinamizawa Teiryuujyo (the never-before-released original concept story for the Higurashi series), Higurashi Outbreak (a chapter formerly available only in drama CD format), and a brand-new arc exclusive to Higurashi Hou–the Kamikanshi Chapter. All 14 of these chapters will be released individually on Steam and our website as translation progresses.
