Fancy Pants References
I happened to notice a lot of neat little references in this game to some of the original Fancy Pants games, as well as other things. I compiled a list of everything I happened to notice in my play through, let me know if you guys noticed anything too!

1. At the beginning of the game, Kaboodle and Cutie Pants make a return from Fancy Pants 3. Later on, when Cutie Pants is talking to the attendant, she complains about her brother being slow. This might be a joke about how he failed to keep up with the pirates who kidnapped her in the third game. If you read the notes in the bottles she leaves behind, she frequently complains about what is taking him so long to save her.

2. Early on the game, we learn that the King's Royal Bathtub has been flipped over by the rain and the villagers have taken shelter in it. This same bathtub appears at the beginning of the third game. Back then it was being stollen by a group of pirates (the same ones in this game), this is why Cutie Pants complains that there will be no more "stinky pirates" now that the tub is flipped over.

3. Before the Inklings take over as the only enemy in the game, we can see a variety of enemies that all appeared in past games. The spiders and mice have appeared as the most basic enemy in very other Fancy Pants game. Although the toothpick ninjas have only appeared in the final levels of Fancy Pants 3.

4. At the beginning of the game, Fancy Pants already owns a pencil that he was capable of using to attack ordinary enemies. However this pencil was not present in the first two games. It only appears mid-way through world 3, when Fancy Pants must acquire it to get past a blockade of enemies.

5. Although snails do not appear in this game, their shells still appear in random places around the map. In the second game you could use a defeated snail's shell as a ball to play golf with.

6. After we reach the Bathtub Tower we can see the Mayor and King talking in the background. The Mayor has appeared in the beginning of every game since the second. The King appeared in the beginning of the third game.

7. The chocolate Ice Cream Cones, that we can purchase from the vendor in Bathtub Tower, are a reference to the all-important Ice Cream Cone from the second game.

8. When the Mayor follows Fancy Pants to the field to ask if he can handle the Inklings, he makes a reference to the silly plots from the first two games by saying something along the lines of "Maybe this will prove you can do better than rescuing ice cream or starling sleeping penguins." In the first game we have no stated motives and the game merely ends after we reach the cave of a sleeping penguin and defeat it in battle. In the second game our only motive is to get back the Ice Cream Cone stollen from us by an angry rabbit.

9. The Pirate Captain we meet later on is actually the main antagonist of the third game in the series. Notably his original name was Captain Rainbow Beard, due to his naturally rainbow-colored beard. This lead him to be mocked by his crew and eventually overthrown, only to be replaced by little girl who beat him, Cutie Pants. To help him regain control of his crew, he tells us where to find the Mythical Beard Dye of Norris for the sole purpose of turning his beard manlier. After his beard turns brown, he renames himself Captain Manly Beard. In this game it can be seen that the effects of the beard dye are wearing off, as his beard is now a brownish-colored rainbow.

10. The members of the Captain's pirate crew, whom we free from ink, were all dancing after we saved them. This is because they were originally found in a disco room on the pirate ship in the third game.

11. One of the final hats available in the game appears to be a purple chullo hat with eyes and fangs. This is a reference to the demon character from the Reincarnation series.

12. The Saw Blade attack, that you can unlock in this game, was already present in the third game. It could be preformed by charging your attack in mid-air, just like in this game, except you didn't have to unlock it.

Well that's all I could find. Did you guys find any cool references in the game?

I'm pretty sure you can't reference something if it's in the same storyline

Really is that how it works?

No? It's called references to the past.
