SAVE FAILED - Unable to retrieve save contents
Loaded up the game for the first time, started a new campaign and ran around the tutorial area destroying every structure. When I returned to 'Dan', I got the SAVE FAILED: Unable to retrieve save contents error and the game returned me to the menu.

I did some searching and couldn't find much besides the fact that this issue has occurred since the original game used GFWL, which is frustrating (I definitely didn't have this issue when I played it originally).

Then I checked the bug thread here and found some suggestions to check if my save file was read only, which it was! So I quickly unchecked 'read only' for the folder and all contents, loaded the game, played the tutorial again and... same error.

I'd really like to actually play more than just the tutorial mission, does anyone have a proper solution for this?

The maximum scrap you can get from there is 70 I think. And yes it is a bug, here's a work-around:

You gotta make a shortcut on your desktop and allow it admin access. Run the game and play the tutorial til it crashes again and exit the game (be sure to get all 70 of the scrap). Reboot the game and look for an autosave and it should have one saved at the beginning of Parker. If it doesn't, run the tutorial again and it should advance to Parker like normal.

I told them they should pin this in the Troubleshot thread but they didn't do it.

A few days ago my game crashed during a save. Had to replay the mission.

Its a good game but so buggy

I was recently able to pass the tutorial when I went straight to the objective, completed it, and went straight back without touching most of the other buildings, so I ended up with 20-30 less scrap than I would have had from completely exploring the area. Can someone please confirm if this is a bug which prevents you from continuing if you collect too much scrap in the tutorial? If so, what's the threshold?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Got it, thanks for clarifying. I get that fixing bugs like this isn't always the easiet thing, but it would be great if they could document it here more clearly. Hope this helps others with the same issue!

No wonder they didn't, this is not the proper way to do it. No such game should require admin rights. I guess they'd rather fix the issue so that you'd never have to grant the game admin rights in the first place.

It's because they didn't develop this under Windows 10 but rather Windows 8. So they were not aware of how strict the W10 OS is when it comes to default permissions and didn't program it to accomodate this.

I mean, as long as you collect less than 70 scrap during the tutorial, it's also fine, right? It's not like the amount of extra scrap you get during that tutorial makes a massive difference. Still annoying, but at least you can play the game.

The scrap collected at the beginning didn't seem to matter, I rushed in and took out the marked structures and ran back rfight away and it still crashed.

Interesting... I'm able to clear the tutorial as long as I only destroy the marked structures and then return. It's only if I collect too much more scrap that it crashes.

User Account Control was introduced in Vista, in 2007.

That has nothing to do with it.
