So is this a crash or 'just' a return ?
If it is not a crash, can you send the games logfile (Red_Faction_Guerrilla_Re-Mars-tered.log, next to games .exe) to bugs@kaikogames.com ?
I can't promise this is enough already, might need more diagnostics.
But if returning to menu when the game stops for whatever reason is not considered a crash, then I guess I will send that info to that email address.
EDIT: Email sent.
Turns out, the game compresses data, finds out the data doesn't fit into a savegame and hard-quits at that point.
Please note this is the original games code, nothing we created.
Now - I have no immediate idea how to resolve this. We need to look at what is going on data wise as this is a new save I imagine and stuff like that should never happen.
Unfortunately this means it will take a while.
I add a bit of log output to the function so with the next build we get more info. Sorry for that :(
So far though the game is running greally reat at 1440p on my 1080 and hexcore i7.
*xbox one controller has to be on before launching game or wont be detected.
*4k 60hz not available until set to full screen exclusive.

right click properties, compatbility run as admin.
Glad it worked! thanks for letting us know.
Steam itself can have issues when its installed to something other then the c: drive. I and others have had to put the steam client into admin mode as well because it would regularly get file access errors applying patches after download.
That background, I wouldnt be surprised if the common denomonator of us having this issue is we have our client installed other then to the C: drive.
Here are some examples of what i was referring to:

However you look at it, it's the system used by the majority of players, so it should be the base for testing:

You're right and I am not complaining about player's choice. But about steam simply not working as promised.
