Baskets and Plant fibres

So I built a load of baskets to store food- which took rather longer that I was expecting- and not long after I saw one of my guys was unloading all the dried meat from the basket it was in and putting it all over the floor. As far as I can make out, when the basket needs repairing, the idiots completely unload it. Is that correct?

I now have all of my baskets in need of repair, and for several day/night cycles none of them have been fixed, apparently for lack of plant fibres. I have plant fibres added to my gathering tasks, which is set to top priority with several apparently active workers. There's no shortage of other materials like sticks and stones, and I've limited rope making to five items. I can't see anything obvious in the biome that would explain why nobody can find me plant fibres: It's early summer in a temperate landscape (does the game even have any other types?)

Basically, I have no idea why nobody can repair my baskets, or why I don't seem to be able to gather plant fibres.

Is there something obvious I'm missing?

Afaik, when you add multiple items to a gathering group they will keep go after the closest items they can find first.

If you want to speed up gathering plant fiber, then create a group that have only that as task.

and for that reason (storages like pits, baskets, etc.) never built them all at the same time!
so you will not be out of storage places while unloading one before repairs!
I wait at least one day before I built the second one, for the same food.
