Uhm, really? Because i somehow remember Wrestling being insanely popular here in Germany during the very late 80's to late 90's, it started with Catch Up on RTL (WCW), then Tele 5 showed WWF (and all PPV's, Summerslam 1992 was even shown live) and then DSF with WCW (and GLOW in the beginning), Eurosport with All Japan, Sportkanal with USWA and RTL 2 with WWF. Did we live in the same Germany? Heck, i still have a set of 1991 WWF Trading Cards that got released here. Germany was one of two foreign countries (along with England) that basically kept the WWF afloat during their massive down time near bankruptcy, hence why they went to tours here every 4-6 months between 1993 and 1996 and hence why they created the European Championship and taped a WWF Raw Show in Berlin, all the while WCW was pushing Alex Wright because "German fans are important!". Heck, WCW even remained popular here while Vince Russo completely destroyed the company with his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (hence why WCW Millennium Final, the only Wrestling PPV ever held in Germany, happened)
You mean the same games made by AKI with the same exact gameplay/mechanics/controls as No Mercy? Yeah, total crap!
Because even in real life promotions get attacked for it. While liberals and other morons go "equality!", "Women are just as capable", they somehow think having a woman fake fighting a guy is wrong.
WWE has to adhere to it since they are a public company. The backlash from the stock holders would be too massive, even if it's just in game.
All the other questions can be simply answered with "Yuke's simply just flat out sucks and have sucked for nearly 20 years by now, sure every once in a while they somehow created a nice game (like WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007) but their track record is craptastic for a reason. I remember when everybody was happy when THQ went under and Take-Two picking up the license because "it sure as hell means VC is making the games or they find another company" but that never happened, it's still the same old ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Yuke's from Japan.
I guess the only thing that would make you happy is get an N64 or an Emulator, get No Mercy (and if you use an emulator look up the roster mods for it) because i doubt you would enjoy Fire Pro Wrestling, since it doesn't have the "Entertainment" but rather real Pro Wrestling and there really is nothing else - unless those guys doing Pro Wrestling X (it's available here on Steam) would finally get their ♥♥♥♥ right and actually work on that game, since it's completely based on WWF No Mercy but also has been in what only can be described as development hell since 2002.
@Igal Vee:
I checked it out and it sounds interesting if you're looking for a real simulation but that's not quite what I want. I just want to pick my favourite wrestlers and have a good time. I don't care for any restrictions move-wise, etc., I hate too many counters, I just want to have fun.
@Apathy:
Thanks for the hint about mods (I dunno why I never thought about it). I will try to get some working.
@ShadowAngel:
Oh well, I forgot to mention that I didn't have satellite TV until mid '90s and thus rarely had a chance to watch it as only one aunt was watching it and she was considered a freak for that xD
I loved WCW on DSF, especially the commentary was hilarious. I still have a CD from Xmas Brawl that came with a t-shirt and features Alex Wright's theme.
It also wasn't popular where I lived, i.e. noone except 2 friends ever heard about it. Sure, we had the GameBoy, NES and SNES games but we really didn't know what it was all about... but we had a great time hitting each other and making use of all the glitches they had.
I really like the No Mercy gameplay a lot. The WWF Arcade and WCW Backstage, etc. games had more "arcade-ish" controls that were clunky and didn't allow full control - at least it never felt right. Well, I guess this is a matter of personal taste but it felt like Mortal Kombat and I never liked those controls either. I prefer a more fluid playstyle.
About intergender matches: it's just a ridiculous restriction.
We are not talking about real life but about games and even in real life, some women would be more than a challenge to any men (just thinking about Chyna). If they allowed modding then fans could "fix" that kind of stuff and it wouldn't be the developer's fault... but OK, they don't want it, I get it... pffff.
I still have my N64 and No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000 and many others. But TBH it looks awful on today's TVs and of course the roster is limited and outdated, not to speak about audio... but I guess I will try WWF Legends when I get a chance and I will probably be happy with it from the looks of it.
Still, it's a pity and a waste of potential on those yearly WWE games. They have so much to offer, yet they added too many restrictions and seem to forget basic functionality... it could be fantastic, really.
I will keep an eye on Pro Wrestling X. It looks very promising! Thank you for that!
