Looking for a game like WWE No Mercy [N64]
Let's start by saying that I'm "old" (36y) and from Germany.
I didn't grow up with WWE/WWF like many others because Wrestling is not that popular here. I saw some "main events" per year, however, it was enough to get me hooked.
I was a big Undertaker fan right from the first time I ever saw him (I think it was some casket match against Yokozuna), I must have been around 12-13y back then.
I bought basically all Wrestling games, 2 for my Gameboy, 3 for my SNES, many many for my N64 (even the rather crappy WCW ones), ending with "No Mercy" when my console era came to an end. I loved that one! So many options, unlockables, etc. - like a dream come true.
Years later I played WWE games with my kids on their Wii and then there's another break until... well, until I see a promo on Steam: WWE coming to PC!

I didn't hesitate and bought WWE 2k15 and after seeing the Showcase mode for 2k16, I bought it too, hoping for general improvements.
I may be alone with my opinion but I love the Showcase mode. It's so great to relive some of those moments, even with stupid *bleeping* editing of some videos.
However, it was also a reason not to buy 2k17 (the selection of matches is just outright boring) and 2k18 altogether.

I kinda enjoyed both games despite many issues but there's so much "basic" stuff that I am missing.
What I really want from a WWE game is entertainment, after all, that's what the "E" stands for, doesn't it?
That said, I don't care for the "Universe" mode and never did. "My Career" was a nice idea but really really awfully done. Even the Wii games were better (and they were bad) - why not some multiple choice story lines like in "No Mercy"?
Well, you may have figured from the title already: I want full access to my match setups like I had back in WWE No Mercy.
For example:
  • Why can't I create intergender matches?
    I understand that they may not allow them in Universe mode - but otherwise?!

  • ]Why can't I set all match parameters like I want them?
    E.g. there's a 10/20/30 man Royal Rumble - why not 100 (yes, "No Mercy" again)!? Why not allow us to select elimination possibilities? First blood, pinfall, submission (in/outside ring), countout, DQ, whatever?! There is no way to have a 6-man match with pinfalls, a Survivor Series kind of setup, etc.
    That's such a waste! Simply offer presets like "TLC" with the option to customize every setting.

  • Why can't I attack the referee/team mate on purpose?
    Even my old SNES game allowed me to do so!

  • Why can't I give commands to my team mate?
    I remember having a possibility to call for my partner in much older games

  • There are some decent match ideas in the Showcase mode - why can't we select them?
    E.g. 5-Star matches, Casket matches, Buried Alive matches, Body bag matches, etc.

  • Why can't I see the current match settings after a match has started, e.g. in Pause menu?
    That's really some basic stuff!
Is there a wrestling game like that?
What direction is the WWE game series going? It seems to stray further and further away, not tempting me to purchase them at all.
I'd even ignore license stuff, I don't like most of the newer wrestlers anyways ;)

PS: the loading times for custom wrestlers are awful and ridiculous, even on my SSD.
Why don't you allow us to create/update some cache to speed up the process? It basically made me not use the CAW mode and removing all custom wrestlers from Universe!

PPS: the divas look just outright awful! You can get nightmares from them! Sorry, had to say that.

You could just play one of the many No Mercy mods. There's a ton of them so there's enough variety to feel like a bunch of different games in that style. You've got different federations and eras. Tons to choose from. Stuff like this

Uhm, really? Because i somehow remember Wrestling being insanely popular here in Germany during the very late 80's to late 90's, it started with Catch Up on RTL (WCW), then Tele 5 showed WWF (and all PPV's, Summerslam 1992 was even shown live) and then DSF with WCW (and GLOW in the beginning), Eurosport with All Japan, Sportkanal with USWA and RTL 2 with WWF. Did we live in the same Germany? Heck, i still have a set of 1991 WWF Trading Cards that got released here. Germany was one of two foreign countries (along with England) that basically kept the WWF afloat during their massive down time near bankruptcy, hence why they went to tours here every 4-6 months between 1993 and 1996 and hence why they created the European Championship and taped a WWF Raw Show in Berlin, all the while WCW was pushing Alex Wright because "German fans are important!". Heck, WCW even remained popular here while Vince Russo completely destroyed the company with his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (hence why WCW Millennium Final, the only Wrestling PPV ever held in Germany, happened)

You mean the same games made by AKI with the same exact gameplay/mechanics/controls as No Mercy? Yeah, total crap! :steamfacepalm:

Because even in real life promotions get attacked for it. While liberals and other morons go "equality!", "Women are just as capable", they somehow think having a woman fake fighting a guy is wrong.
WWE has to adhere to it since they are a public company. The backlash from the stock holders would be too massive, even if it's just in game.

All the other questions can be simply answered with "Yuke's simply just flat out sucks and have sucked for nearly 20 years by now, sure every once in a while they somehow created a nice game (like WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007) but their track record is craptastic for a reason. I remember when everybody was happy when THQ went under and Take-Two picking up the license because "it sure as hell means VC is making the games or they find another company" but that never happened, it's still the same old ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Yuke's from Japan.

I guess the only thing that would make you happy is get an N64 or an Emulator, get No Mercy (and if you use an emulator look up the roster mods for it) because i doubt you would enjoy Fire Pro Wrestling, since it doesn't have the "Entertainment" but rather real Pro Wrestling and there really is nothing else - unless those guys doing Pro Wrestling X (it's available here on Steam) would finally get their ♥♥♥♥ right and actually work on that game, since it's completely based on WWF No Mercy but also has been in what only can be described as development hell since 2002.

Thanks for your answers!

@Igal Vee:
I checked it out and it sounds interesting if you're looking for a real simulation but that's not quite what I want. I just want to pick my favourite wrestlers and have a good time. I don't care for any restrictions move-wise, etc., I hate too many counters, I just want to have fun.

@Apathy:
Thanks for the hint about mods (I dunno why I never thought about it). I will try to get some working.

@ShadowAngel:
Oh well, I forgot to mention that I didn't have satellite TV until mid '90s and thus rarely had a chance to watch it as only one aunt was watching it and she was considered a freak for that xD
I loved WCW on DSF, especially the commentary was hilarious. I still have a CD from Xmas Brawl that came with a t-shirt and features Alex Wright's theme.
It also wasn't popular where I lived, i.e. noone except 2 friends ever heard about it. Sure, we had the GameBoy, NES and SNES games but we really didn't know what it was all about... but we had a great time hitting each other and making use of all the glitches they had.

I really like the No Mercy gameplay a lot. The WWF Arcade and WCW Backstage, etc. games had more "arcade-ish" controls that were clunky and didn't allow full control - at least it never felt right. Well, I guess this is a matter of personal taste but it felt like Mortal Kombat and I never liked those controls either. I prefer a more fluid playstyle.

About intergender matches: it's just a ridiculous restriction.
We are not talking about real life but about games and even in real life, some women would be more than a challenge to any men (just thinking about Chyna). If they allowed modding then fans could "fix" that kind of stuff and it wouldn't be the developer's fault... but OK, they don't want it, I get it... pffff.

I still have my N64 and No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000 and many others. But TBH it looks awful on today's TVs and of course the roster is limited and outdated, not to speak about audio... but I guess I will try WWF Legends when I get a chance and I will probably be happy with it from the looks of it.
Still, it's a pity and a waste of potential on those yearly WWE games. They have so much to offer, yet they added too many restrictions and seem to forget basic functionality... it could be fantastic, really.

I will keep an eye on Pro Wrestling X. It looks very promising! Thank you for that!
