Destroy green vines?

Many of the tiles have green vines that have loot behind them. There are grey squares to step on, but I can't seem to destroy the vines. Is there a pattern to stepping on the tiles that eliminates the vines? Any clues on the tile that indicates how?

For one type you have to stand on the square that displays the three symbols combined, for the other type you have to use the hints to stand on the square that displays the three symbols combined. You only get one guess for the first puzzle tile: if you stand on the wrong square you are permanently locked out of the path to the treasure.
