I am honestly not a fan of the current character line up. You would think more games based on D&D would offer custom characters but the Devs are correct, I own a few of the D&D adventure systems (Temple of Elemental Evil being my favorite) and they all have pre-generated Heroes. In fact, there are dozens of them across multiple games, way more then these four. I cant help but feel the Devs said "Lets try something new, grab the obscure character list." Which isn't in itself a bad thing, I have yet to play Tomb of Annihilation but I would hate to think these are the four Default Heroes who must save the world.
*By the By, ALL the Heroes from the D&D Adventure System are compatible with every new game using that system. i.e. The Heroes I have from Temple of Elemental Evil will work fine in The Legend of Drizzit or Castle Ravenloft. Sooo, if the Devs add more Heroes, even if they are not custom Heroes, there are some awesome (and more iconic) choices we could potentially see with future updates*
What this man says. I have all the board games and my kids and I swap the characters all the time. Its great fun and I hope they do the same with this game. Saying that, I'd have oped for Castle Ravenloft before Tomb of Annihilation.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of any of these characters either. I prefer any D&D game, board or otherwise, that at least gives you a few more choices to work with for your group of 4. If there were 6 to 8 to choose from it would probably appeal to more people. Of course making your own characters would be the best option, but for some games it's too hard to maintain balance if people can min/max and create munchkin characters. Trouble with this group of characters is I'm not interested in any of them, especially Dragonbait the "holy warrior" (paladin I'm guessing) and the stupid bard. I really don't like bards as a character class, and I can generally do without paladins as well.
I remember a table top game where we didn't know we were going to be stuck in Ravenloft so not one of us made characters that were prepared to deal with that setting because, initially, we weren't in Ravenloft. It took a long time for us to catch on because our DM was trying not to make it obvious, and that made it even more fun. We had to try to adapt and survive. Great setting, made even better by our DM. Ah, the days when we all had time to gather and play around a table... I always hope that computer versions of these games will emulate that feeling, but they always fall short. Maybe this one will pull it off if they add multiplayer.
Drizzt is frickin' stupid. One of my least favourite characters anywhere, ever.
Same here. Creating my own characters is a *must have* feature for RPG games and D&D games in particular.
The Adventure System board games, which we are based on, comes with specific sets of rules which may differ from other D&D games. For instance, the board games come with pre-made heroes only. The Heroes from Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation are directly taken from the Tomb of Annihilation board game.
We are going to add more heroes taken from Tomb of Annihilation for sure, and we are certainly open the possibility of adding other iconic heroes from the other games.
Regarding customizable heroes, we are taking notes of all your comments and we'll keep you updated on this subject. Please do continue to give us your feedback on the matter, it's very valuable to us.
