Bought Steam version of game, cannot get mouse to work on menu

After wanting to play this game for a long time I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy it at full price. Upon installing and launching the game I cannot get the mouse to work when I try to click things. I can move the mouse but clicking does nothing. Please help me fix this issue so I can play.
