Quetzlcoatl's bell?

I'm stuck at the serpent. I have to fix his bell and can't even see it anywhere. The map says I have an action to perform in his lair, and nothing I have works anywhere. I can't find the second half of the tongs to get the crystal in the log, either, which I think would might start a series of actions that would help me with the other things I can't do yet.
Am I missing one of those spots where you have to click on a teeny little thing you can't even really see? Artifax seems to be fond of that.
