Black Goat
I usually just let him chill and follow me around, does he actually do anything?

Don’t think so.

It just follows you around slowly, doesn't serve any purpose

Whack him with your saber and he runs in the direction of what you're hunting.

pretty sure it's a reference to the movie "The Witch"
Pay attention to the ending.

No, I’m pretty sure goats were associated with the devil long before that movie.

funny when i came back to town after fighting the werewolf and damaging the tree, the black goat was walking out of the barn with dead body just sitting in there, sneaky little phillip

What they are talking about is the cinematic icon of the movie The Witch (2015 film)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Witch_(2015_film)

In the movie there was a black goat who became something of a celebrity on his own. Black Phillip (real name Charlie) was in the movie but was also extremely violent and actually put some crew and even a cast member in the hospital. He was incredibly vicious and smart and it earned him his own little place in horror not simply because he was a black goat but because he was an intelligent and vicious one to boot.:pleased:

Edit: Sorry for the semi-necro, but I was looking up stuff about the goat and saw this was the first post about it and wanted to share that fun little tidbit.

I think the black goat is clearly an homage to Black Phillip from The VVitch but Mr. Seagal is correct that goats have long been associated with the devil and/or witchcraft, especially in Europe. Baphomet, anyone?

The goat symbolizes the Devil, watching over you.
The idea of having a black goat being aggresive and killing people while being concealed as the devil, was most likely taken from The Witch, a wonderful movie I'd recommend checking out. The goat in that movie name is Black Philip.

I have tested more then 10 times, that hitting the goat will lead you to the boss, usually you can't follow him far due to his speed being great. But will lead you in the direction, very useful if you are new and don't know landmarks.

Is this true?
