However I think that it totally depends on your goals, if you want to develop towards a late game combat orientation, then go for the military tree, It takes longer for you to get going, but mid - late game you'll be rolf stomping any AI you come across if they are evenly matched.
I haven't touched much on industry yet, money isnt much of a problem when your spies are siphoning 13k or so energy regularly. The production would be nice, but I prefer city growth over initial production gains, I'd rather be able to work all my tiles.
Knowledge is also awesome, however again, I tend to go down knowledge as a second choice after im done with prosperity..
