Dark and Gloomy
Anybody else find that the game is depressingly dark and lacking in colour? Actually kind of wears you down after a while and gets depressing.

Quite the opposite for me. Looks really bright an colourful to me, cartoony even.

I actually agree with you Drunk Bear.

I saw the trailer, emphasizing the point that humanity was leaving a broken, ashen world for a new world full of life. I was expecting more things to be seen on the map, more life forms, more colour, more of everything really.
Yeah the planets could use some more color or at least have some worlds be dark and some be brighter.

I would tend to agree as well.

The colour difference between different terrain types doesn't seem that extreme (tundra, desert, etc) so I am having to mouse hover alot more.

I am also finding it hard to spot MIASMA always, particularly when over a tile that has forest like vegetation. I've merrily walked loads of units into this faint purple fog without spotting it was there.

If they could brighten the gas or add some animation to make it clearer that would be good :ss13ok:

Edit : just looking at the game again, the desert tiles are green and look like normal grass to me and the actual grassland looks like a marsh tile from Civ V :koh:

I really felt like it was wearing me down after playing for a few hours. Earlier I went into my screenshots to look at Civ 5 to compare and it blew my mind, Civ 5 was bursting with bright colours and I think that's why I could play that for so long, Beyond Earth just requires me to have a bit of a break so I don't want to hang myself (not literally of course)

I hate games that aren't horror or suspenseful type games that have a gloomy and dark feeling to them.

I agree! Game feels a bit dreary, especially when compared to the crisp and sunny Civ 5. I also agree that some of the tiles are a bit hard to read and require mouseovers.

I think the environments are okay but the real problem I've been having with the game's color scheme is the menus. For some reason, I find all of the menus extremely difficult to read because of the colors. I always have to take a second and drink in the entire menu before I have an understanding of what I'm supposed to click to proceed or what I should do to achieve a desired effect. All of the blue really blurs together. I feel like I'm going to need a color mod to make the UI brighter or something, just so I can see what I'm doing.

It seems a wasted opportunity that the oceans are just "ocean" colour.

Given the alien setting they could be orange, pink, green, purple or ideally a random choice of these at the start of every game.

That would brighten things up no end !

I agree totally. I was about to post something to this effect myself. I do seem to remember that Alpha Centauri was also somewhat dark and gloomy.
It seems like we are always playing at night?
If there were some way to "Brighten" the planetary phase of the simulation, that would be sincerely appreciated. Pleasing graphics add much to the long term enjoyment of any simulation. I did find the bonus planet Kepler to have slightly brighter, more pleasing graphics.
Perhaps a brightness, contrast, or gamma slider (setting) on the options menu for a future patch?
One other helpful change would be to change the black "fog of war" to a white cloud effect like in Civ5?

My feeling exactly

The dark and gloomy bit is the UI, if only one could mod in the civ5 generic UI element style on Beyond Earth.

They need to do something, it really is like always playing at night.

Yup. Like they planned to do a day-night cycle, and the just left it at "night" instead - because space is dark y'know!

I can't believe the terrible colour choices.

A mish mash of watercolours, pastels, and neons. Painted over a very dark canvas.

Too much bloody contrast.

People aren't stupid. It's clear we are looking for planets that have liquid water and the right conditions for life. Earth-size planets in the habitable zone of a host star. We found some more this year. Particularily the Kepler-186f.

But you cannot tell me, that if humans were able to travel 490 light-years from Earth, to any of these planets, that they would look as shi--- as this. Covered in neons and darkness.
