No. No. To be honest.
It is different, and it is good.

I understand it's like a futuristic civ 5 mod... I played many hours of alpha Centauri - probably more than I played civ 5. Both games I enjoyed.

Just a bit unsure of this one. I would probably go for the collection if I was too buy this.

Make sure you get Rising Tide DLC - it opens Waterbases.

I like the old Alpha Centauri - Alien Crossfire Spies. You had to manually send them to the target city. Then they would infiltrate or fight what ever defending spy was there. But you could steal cash and technologies, just like now but without the delay.

Less spiritual successor, and more of a homage.
Though to give some credit, it's a fair bit more complex than just a "futuristic civ 5 mod". This is most obvious when setting up a new game.

It's still basically "civ in space", but with a number of little game mechanic twists of it's own to not just be literally so.
Its still trying to create an atmosphere like that of Alpha Centauri and it doesn't do that bad a job of it, though it's often only surface level for the most part.
Mechanically it's more streamlined and easy to enjoy the fun bits, though that comes with a tradeoff that it's not as complex.
Like all Civ games these days it needs ALL the DLC installed to be the most fun. Otherwise you're basically playing an expensive demo.
The mods, the ones that work (which to be fair does seem to be most), do wonders to extend its shelf life.
Ignoring the fact that this is recommended for all steam games anyway, get it on sale.

all one of them lol, far better than most civ games in that respect, winning from losing i guess, i wish this game was better received, it could've been so good after a few major DLCs like 5 was

Wholeheartedly agree. I loved Alpha Centauri and the base Beyond Earth was a letdown when I bought it. Once I got Rising Tide I can get lost in a game "one more turn, one more turn...". I have a lot of unrecorded hours on Beyond Earth because I used to play offline during transit on my laptop.

Beyond Earth has some throwbacks to Alpha Centauri but they are designed quite different. Alpha Centauri has deep characters and lore where each faction has a well-defined ideology. Beyond Earth is almost the opposite: the factions are like blank slates that can mature to be wildly different depending on their technologies, affinity, personality traits, quest choices, and more. I absolutely love the amount of customization in this game, it's a really unique civ experience. The tradeoff is that the factions and setting can seem very shallow, especially compared to the awesome setting of AC.

Plus I like how they did border expansion with the water cities. You're not fixed to anything and just floating, so why not put a propeller on it?
You want more workable area? Go take it.

Plus, while the chances of ever being able to pull it off were low, the fact you could go on the offensive with your city and defeat units by doing a hit and run with it was all the reason needed to keep trying :steamhappy:.
