In the case of Mantle its restricted to AMD tech.
Vulcan is amd mantle at the base level which will be supported by both companies and more cards.
That's a bad plan, you have any idea how often that would mess up? Best off leaving it to the user, and it looks nothing like an error window...
Mantel is a low-level API
It communicates directly onto the GPU and boosts performance, instead of an API like Direct X that runs a lot of the overhead in software and consumes a lot of CPU power.
It only works on newer AMD cards and it's been abandon at this point; however DX12 and Vulcan will both replace it.
If you have a newish AMD card (O think the 7000 and higher), it should work fine and you should see a 10 to 20% frame rate boost. If you have an Nvidia Geforce card, you can only use DX11
DX isn't a low level API
DX12 is a low level API, and it's only available in Windows 10.
I assume that it won't work for me 'cause that although I'm using an AMD Processor, my GPU is a Geforce.
