Good luck.
Hit shift, middle mouse, or click "Full Speed" to ram!
This. Remember too that you don't have to actually ram the enemy, you can cancel it at any time and slowly drift back to where you were originally. The instant I see that wave of cannon fire appear, I smash the Full Speed button, wait until I ALMOST ram the ghost ship, then cancel it. By then, a second wave should have fired and I'll completely dodge the first one and about 90% of the second one. This way, I don't take any damage from ramming the ghost ship.
Beyond evasive maneuvers, you just need a ship with a TON of cannons. Early game I like the Galleon for this, provided I selected a profession that can afford it, like admiral. Later, the Steam Behemoth. Remember that you can right-click the Fire button to launch a massive volley! However, it's best to fire one or two "ranging" shots first, in single-fire mode, to make sure those hit so your full volley is less likely to miss. Also, don't bother firing if the ghost ship is "grayed out" so to speak. Your shots will go right through it.
My final tip is this: UPGRADES! Get the cannon one right away if you can, though I always get the hull one as quickly as I can too. The sail one for sailing ships and fuel one for steam ships are both useful too, though they won't help with combat at all. But ABSOLUTELY get the cannon one so you can set the ghosties on fire! Gotta love that DPS!
Good luck and happy ghost hunting!

It's not the developer's job to educate anyone on spoiler tags. It's not the developer's fault if someone doesn't use them. It's not the developer's fault you chose to come here and saw it. It's not the responsibility of the developer, God, your mother, your neighbor's dog, or anyone else if you decide to come here. That's on YOU, buddy. YOU decided to come here, no one put a gun to your head. Newsflash: Not everyone reads pinned threads anyways. The developer could put a pinned thread up asking people to use spoiler tags or not discuss spoilers and guess what? People might still miss it. Not to mention I've never seen a game do that. Additionally, it's not REQUIRED by some Steam rule for people to put spoilers in spoiler tags. If it is, please post it because I'd love to see it. If you don't post some kind of evidence supporting your claim that it's a rule and it's required, then I'm not inclined to believe you as I haven't found any rule mandating such.
You're assuming an awful lot when you say that everyone bought the game for peanuts on a sale. In fact that whole statement about the game's price and "unlike me" is just dripping with entitlement. I'm pretty sure I actually did pay full price for the game, though I could easily be wrong about that as it was around a year and a half to two years ago if memory serves (yes, I bought the game way back in the beginning). Regardless, what someone paid doesn't matter. You're not more entitled to spoiler tags or anything else than the rest of us who paid for the game just because you paid more. We ALL paid for the game, thus that makes us EQUAL.
Developers aren't necessarily required or mandated by some rule or law to moderate the forums for their game. I know that one pretty well because there's another community I've seen that wasn't moderated by the developers of the game for over 6 months. In fact, the developers of that game didn't even post messages or news or even show that they were listening to the community because they implemented whatever they wanted instead of trying to satisfy their customers who were asking for the promised (and undelivered) content to be added, not graphical improvements. Developers are not required to enforce any rules or make sure people post spoiler tags or ensure everyone uses the search function or anything else. If you know of some law on the books or some Steam rule or some other regulation or dogma mandating such, please provide it because I'd love to see it and again, if you don't post some kind of supporting evidence (other than your own opinion, or common courtesy, or forum etiquette, those aren't laws) I'm not inclined to believe you since I haven't seen any such evidence.
Maybe next time take a few deep breaths, count to 10, etc to cool off before you decide to make a flame post, huh? Flaming is against the rules you know and can get you banned. Big thanks! :-)
You're right, if you play the game in fantasy mode. If you're in the old-school mode you don't see the ghost ship at all. Regardless don't worry about Stasi, you're stuck in the game and legitimately asking for help, which as far as I know is allowed.
A suggestion (HEADS UP, THERE MAY BE SPOILERS AHEAD, there you go Stasi) for getting past the ghost ship (aside from what I posted): Play the game a bit in the original, old-school mode (turn off the lantern) for a bit, until you unlock the admiral profession, then make a new file in fantasy mode, buy a clipper, load it with enough food to get to New York, then stuff your hold with as many luxury goods as you can buy. Haul ass to New York (you won't need cannons since you can outrun any ship in the clipper except the ghost ship, which you can't fight the first time anyways, it won't take anything the first time except the box) and sell all your luxury goods (hopefully at 30 pounds or so apiece) then head to Nassau. Buy a galleon (only a few hundred pounds more than the clipper) and cram it as full of cannons and cannon balls as you can. Your leftover money should go toward upgrading your cannons to maximum to unlock the greased shot. Hull integrity helps too, but cannon upgrades are a MUST.
Personally, once I've done this I start making runs between Nassau (where the luxury goods are about the same price as London) to buy, then head to New York to sell. Faster than going all the way back to London. I usually keep doing this run until I get the steam behemoth (though you might not have it unlocked yet depending on your game progress), grabbing any extra upgrades to hull and sails along the way if I haven't maxed those out already. It's just as good in a fight as the galleon, is about the same speed, and you don't have to worry about tearing sails in a storm. Plus I *THINK* (although I could be wrong here) it carries a bit more food and luxury goods than the galleon. Once I've done this, I just start adventuring, burning food for fuel and grabbing all the steam behemoth upgrades (the fuel one REALLY helps with fuel efficiency by the way) along the way, as nothing on the seven seas can stop me at that point.
Hope all that helps!
Woof. You got issues my dude.
