Gothic 1 Classic

Access Violation -- Can't Play
Hey folks,

I recently re-downloaded Gothic 1 Classic after a very long hiatus. Only trouble is, I can't launch the game because it gives me an error message talking about an 'Access Violation' and then it lists a memory address. The address is the same every time.

My machine:

Windows 11 x64
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X - 16 Cores @ 3.40GHz
32GB DDR4 RAM
AMD RX 7800 XT w/ 16GB of VRAM

I've tried reinstalling the game to a different drive, tried running the game as an administrator, verifying the game cache, restarting my PC, nothing. Crawling the Internet for information about this but its solutions are vague. Tried running the application in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP, and 7.

I found one solution being to edit the game's configuration file and change the 'Windowed' value to 1 instead of 0. Nope.

It would make my day if anyone had good information on this, seriously thank you!

Update: I tried using the DX 11 mod on my installation thinking it might be related to an antiquated graphical API but unfortunately that didn't work either.

Please, switch to the workshop version of the game and subscribe to Union and DX11 mods.

Thanks for the reply!

How do I go about using the workshop version of the game?

Super appreciate it.

ALSO: for anyone running into the same error, there's a chance the game will create a file on C:\ called "Program.RPT" and this may cause you to run into an error on booting your PC that it being named that way will cause problems. You should be able to open it in Notepad to verify, but this is an error log for Gothic 1. You should be able to safely delete it.

UPDATE: I got it!

It's mindblowing that the developer(s) are STILL supporting their game here after all this time! Thank you!
