Access violation Crash fix!
Now i have noticed different people have different problems starting up the game as so did i at one point. I have patched and installed the basic things but i still ket gtting access violation i even took off the overlay and such all to no avail. So then as i was about to lose hope and call it a waste of money i started going through my laptop settings and as i recalled under the read me files of the game which is accsesible through steam by right clicking on the game in the library then going to properties and browsing local files to find it, anywho the game is originally intended for older versions of windows and as luck would have it there is such an option to run programs meant for older versions of windows on my windows 8 laptop. So i decided to give it a last chance to call my money well spent and after browsing for the game application and troubleshooting it, it worked! My strugle had at long last ended!(About 7 minutes ago actually!) So I bascally found this in my CONTROL PANEL then it should be under PROGRAMS AND FEATURES, from there my options had a sentence that said RUN PROGRAMS MADE FOR PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF WINDOWS. That is it after clicking there browse the file which is the same links you see when browseing the games files and let it troubleshoot with the recommended options or if it doesnt work choose your own test it and hope for the best! I have never ever played this or any of the gothic games but i hope it was well worth my struggle. Hope this helps Many of you out there!(Sorry for the long story i like to blab) >;p

Run Steam and the Games giving you access violations "As Admin" on Windows Vista/7/8 Machines. Or, alternatively, install Steam games to a different folder on your hard drive.

The "Access Violation" error, comes from when a game attempts to make changes to files from within the x86 folder. Windows requires admin rights for most programs to do so. Unfortunately this means you need to either run every Steam game you own "as Admin", or go into your Steam options and stop downloading to the default folder for Steam games in the x86 programs folder.

So long as you install anywhere that is not within x86 programs, you are fine.

Same problem here (on an old XP machine that isn't used for anyting else). Starting with the latest Steam update Gothic crashes everytime I try to load a game or start a new one; before the update everything worked just fine.
The Steam overlay has been disabled all the time, so turning it off doesn't fix the problem...
Verifying game-cache or re-installing doesn't fix it, either.

It's always 'Access Violation' in d3dim700.dll.... :(

Edit:
I've got it working again!
Basically all I needed to do was to bypass starting Gothic via Steam (Buttons in Steam UI or Gothic.exe) by installing the Player-Mod-Kit (http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_34.htm) and then using GothicMod.exe or one of the GothicStarter*.exes.

Thanks worked for me.

@lazee you need to choose the Gothic folder in your System. SteamApps->common->Gothic.

After that you can install it. Now you click in the Gothic folder on the system folder and now you can run the game with the data "GothicMod.exe"

After that i was able to play.

Go into properties and give the game full permissions. Worked like a charm.

I'm getting the Access Violation error as well. In particular, it says something like " 64A83102h can't write to 00000112h". I've tried turning off the Steam Overlay, running the game in compatibility mode for XP, running the game with administrator privileges and even running the game straight from the folder it's installed in - none of these steps work. It always crashes right when I click New Game. Are there any other steps that might be helpful?

Okay, I downloaded that Gothic Mod that's linked above and it seems to work fine now. Wow, you figure that when Steam puts a game up for download, that it'll actually work when you buy it. Work without having to download third party programs, that is.

If you're reading this and the game isn't working for you either and you want to try that Gothic Mod, just make sure you install it to the folder Gothic's in. That's: Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic.

I've had several steam games not work as they should. They need to make sure games are compatible before they release them.

For me Gothic 2 was worse. I finally got Gothic1 to start but never managed to get the second game to start.
