Might most likely need mods though, true. It is over 20 years old after all.
Also, controls are commonly a problem for new players. They work best with only keyboard.
Only controls can be difficult for new players. They are different than in other games, there is no tutorial so it can feel weird at the beginning but once you will be familiar with controls, there will be only pure fun from playing.
Since the game is on a big discount just give it a try. And if you will like it, there is also Gothic 2 which basically has the same gameplay like gothic 1 but everything is improved.
Frankly, I only use the workshop.
Got everything I needed right there.
Well, I don't do much in terms of mods but

Union – patch for Gothic 1
Gothic 1 community patch
Texture Patch by Artemiano
Union Thief Helper (Gothic 1)
My entire list, same order as in the launcher. Honestly, I am not even sure if I would actually need all of that to have this game playable but it works with all of them and I like "never change a running system".
Texture Patch is simply graphical and the last one is of use when you want to open locks as you need to solve a combination of left/right first. Thief Helper shows how far you have been with the right combination.
This game is amazing.
Sadly there are some buggs, instal some patches like Union, it really helps!
