Do I need to buy the Shadow Armor from Diego?

I just joined the Old Camp and got the free Shadow Armor, but Diego offers slightly better armor for 1200 ore. But I also see that I will get even better armor for free in chapter 2 from Stone the blacksmith.

Is it okay to save the ore and just wait for the free armor? How far into chapter 2 will it be before I get it? Or is the usual advice to upgrade as soon as possible? I have over 3000 ore, but I hate to waste it. Is Diego's armor that big of a difference from the free set? The main thing seems to be 10 more weapon protection.

Personally I'd save the ore for potions and training and wait until you get the free piece of armor.
That amount of ore is rather much for a piece of armor that will be replaced by a free and better version not that much later in the game.

I don't think I've ever had to buy a new set of armor in either Gothic or Gothic 2 as the game will give you a new set once it's needed to deal with stronger enemies.

Keep in mind that defense is VERY important in Gothic 1.It makes a huge difference.
My opinion is to buy it . There are many ways to get ore ,but you don't get better defense too often.

Good point. Now I have more than 7000 ore so I'm thinking that's probably enough. Is there much I will need to buy later in the game, other than training costs?

Ha ha, yeah, it's exhausting eating a ton of roasted meat! :-)
