I found this solution online. It is in the Spine FAQ (Spine is a Mod Manager) though, so I don't know if it applies to your case:
"Gothic 1 crashes when starting/loading a game with an Access Violation.
That’s caused by the data execution prevention (DEP) on Windows. To fix the crashes you just need to disable the DEP for Gothic. Therefore just follow these steps: Press Windows + Pause, “Advanced System Settings”, press the upper button “Settings” below “Performance”, choose the tab “DEP” and add all EXE files from the Gothic 2 folder (3, Gothic.exe, GothicMod.exe and KillHelp.exe)."
You could also join our Community Discord where you'll find lots of helpful people.

Resource manager doesn't really do anything TO the game. It's used to add 'Union' mod into the game. It's basically similar to a 'Mod Launcher' app. It can keep track of which Union versions are used and installed along with the modlets (Plug-ins) that get installed. Really, it's not the 'Resource Manager' that is fixing any of the issues... It's the version of Union that's getting installed using the Resource Manager.
Whether or not you should use Resource Manager + Union just depends on what mods you may want to install. There is a bunch of mods that don't require Union. There's also a bunch that do. So, read up on the prerequisites for each mod you're interested in and see if it's something you need. If not, then no... you don't need it. I would encourage you to check out my guide which describes a proper install and modification of the game for modern systems. It's up to date versus all those old outdated one's.
