Criticizing me for having a hard time adjusting to the series when you openly admit to doing so yourself? Lol
I wasnt critizing you, so hommie calm down youself :-)
Once there was a big forum war about this topic and there are tons of youtube videos comparing both games, MW fans think morrowind is better and gothic fans think gothic is better....
I played both games and enjoyed them, but morrowind has aged badly (without mods), while i still replay gothic 1 n 2 every few years....
Gothic 1 & 2 were the better games overall (fully voiced characters and the view distance make morrowind look like even older than it already is)
Step 2: Put all into Strength
Step 3: Kill everything before it can even hit you
Your first layer of defense is not getting hit in the first place. Which is easy against most monsters (interrupt their attacks) and more difficult against humans (blocking is not really feasible in this game).
Without mods, Gothic 1 gets super easy really fast. You just have to avoid monsters and delay some quests for a while.
Once you join a camp, you will get free armor and can buy even better armor right away.
Compare vanilla Gothic 2 to Morrowind then the differnce becomes even more glaring.
Even if I compare Gothic 3 to Oblivion than I like Gothic 3 more. Both games in vanilla a pure and utter sh!t. Both games crash all the time and the level scaling of vanilla Oblivion makes the game unbearable later when all the bandits have glass or deadra armor
But US or UK people usually disagree and point out to the scale of the game world in Morrowind, the complex and more interesting magic system, better camera, better controls and so on.
I can respect that. If they like these game more than they should play them.
The only thing that makes me mad sometimes is that TES players often come to the gothic forums with a superior attitude and start flame wars how bad gothic is and pester the people here.
I never went to Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim forums and told the people there how bad I think these games are in comparison to Gothic/Risen so I expect the same them.
But evidently for people who don't speak the Queen's English much :)
One thing that definitely blows me away is how ahead of its time Gothic is. NPCs have their own schedules, they talk to each other, there's dynamic weather, day/night cycles, people react when you go inside their homes (something TES and Zelda STILL don't have), they react when you draw your weapon. And the AI isn't half bad what with beasts aiming to surround you by default over going one after the other.
1) Copy, I think I've done as many as I can.
2) Did strength and one 1h sword upgrade. Definitely makes things tolerable.
3) Easier said than done when most creatures can one-shot you, but I'm getting the hang of the dodge function at least.
Hope so mate.
Ah, sucks that you get free armor. I already spent 500 ore on these pair of pants.
Sorry mate, lots of pretentious people getting on my ass here.
Then again I'm not surprised that some "get on your ass" when you can't be bothered to even check for keybinds and the stat screen lol Really, it's as simple as hitting the universal pause button aka ESC and going into Options and I believe you're smart enough to figure that out. Hard to believe you "have no issues" playing old games, because there is a lot of them like Gothic, that don't have tutorial screens telling you everthing you need to know to get started.
Lmao, what? Block off certain areas of the game? Literally every area of the game has these one-shot monsters. I'm not just talking about orcs, which yeah, are technically stronger, but the problem is all these monsters have that same strength courtesy of there being no defense stat that you can upgrade like in any other RPG. You can also literally outmaneuver most of them, meaning it's not hard to get to any of the three towns, just tedious.
Hey man, I'll eat crow and admit I was an idiot for not being able to find the stat screen, but that literally has nothing to do with the creatures since it's not like there's a defense skill.
I really have had no issues with older games, at least not the ones that have come out around the time that Gothic. It's honestly silly to brag about beating the game without a tutorial considering most of these early computer games had handbooks that substituted as tutorials lol.
As multiple people already said, listen to the NPCs. They give you tips, like fight one enemy at a time and "Don't get hit first", because you can stunlock enemies. Also, stay on the paths and stay inside some camp in the beginning. And there is actually a big difference dying in 1 hit and dying in 2 after one level-up.
The fighting in general isn't the focus of the game. You basically tank damage until your enemy dies. If you're about to get into a fight, use F5 to quicksave and if you die, F9 to quickload.
Because you asked about stats, press B to see them. And there are no progress-bars or fancy animated UI elements. All stats are shown in numbers, like Morrowind.
Maybe you outta take just a minute out of your day to read this entire thread, because if you did you would see that I have been adapting to the combat system, though I still think it's ridiculously flawed to not provide a defense stat in a fantasy RPG. But I guess for fanboys like yourself even that's asking for too much.
I have done the opposite of hiding in the camp- I've been frequently traversing b/w the three camps because this is an open world game and I'm not going to let a combat flaw stop me from enjoying things. Luckily, I've been investing skill points into strength and 1h weapons, and managed to procure some armor in Old Town, so the issue has become a lot more tolerable.
You can't tank damage in Gothic- it's literally the opposite where you are better off dodging b/c attacking straight-up is going to get you whacked easily.
I found the stat screen and was admittedly an idiot for not being able to find it initially.
Then you have work your way up. And you cant go to many places because there are monsters there which will rip you apart and you cant do anything about it and have to wait to go there until you are stronger.
And after you got stronger you its so rewarding and you feel you have accomplished something.
There are only some older rpgs which gave me the same feeling.
Well I understand that kind of difficulty is not everyone's cup and they have more fun playing something else. Which is totally fine.
People who never played an hardcore rpg like Gothic before of course have some trouble first. That is because its so different from main stream games. Butl there are also rpgs which are even harder e. g. Gothic 2, Blade of Darkness or Eschalon Book 2 for example.
So I am glad you got it now and I hope you have fun with the game. At least in Gothic 2 you get armor pretty quickly about 5 minutes after the start of the game. So you can look forward to it. ^^
