though i personally would recommend to use whatever controles you feel more comfortable with, i personally like and have used both over the years.
edit: Also you need to attack with correct timing. Wait till the attack animation is over then attack right after. You can't spam attack buttons because it will actually cause longer delay between attacks.
In order to fight:
CTRL/Left Mouse + W = Swing forward
CTRL/Left Mouse + A = Swing left
CTRL/Left Mouse + D = Swing right
CTRL/Left Mouse + S = Block
It may seem weird today but you can easily get used to it, as it's quite intuitive.
And if the fight animations seem clunky, you need to find a teacher that will teach you faster and smoother moves.
