How do I fix this problem with the thing?
So let's just start off that I am not the most tech savvy of gamers. With that in mind, I have no idea how to fix this problem. So the problem is this: When I startup the game it starts up... weird. Instead of full screen it does this odd thing where it attempts to go to full screen, then shrinks into an awkward window where the rest of the screen turns black. When I try and use my mouse in game it just doesnt work. I couldn't find a feature to make it windowed or anything cause I thought that maybe it was just an old game and couldnt handle the sheer power of my hd screen and just seized out from fear. And compatability issues (I know a thing or two about compatability issues). When I click alt and tab to get out of it (something accomplished after doing it a few times) it gives a small window with the usual minimize, fullscreen, and "X" button, but none of these are useable and when click it just send the game back into "fullscreen".
Now, before you tell me too google it - I totally did. Most of the stuff I found was unrelated or filled with sketchy links and tech jargon that a pleb like myself couldn't understand like "Adjusted FOV Hor+". Like what does that even mean, I just want my game to work. </3
I tried running it in administrator mode too, didn't seem to make a difference. And when I edited the resolution in the game menu it didnt seem to change anything.

About mouse usage, well, it uses the keyboard. Look up the manual in the installation folder or search for copies you find on the Internet. The manual explains the keyboard controls.

Okay, so that fixed a good amount of the problems. Only ones now is that I can't upon up the steam overlay (or maybe that was part of the problem? I dunno) and it doesn't fit my screen too well. I suppose I can deal with both but the steam overlay would help cause I can't respond to messages without doing a little dance with the alt tab thing a few times.

I had a lot of issues getting to work as well. Tried numerous fixes that didnt seem to work, or somewhere I had made and install error. I kept trying for a few days, came across Gothic Reloaded Mod and intalled that, and then the game worked much better. The downlaod for the the mod is "demo" but it is stated you can install the mod as a patch. Try that mod, and maybe it'll fix ALL of your windowed, blinking, weird old game-ness-related stuff as it did for myself. One note, as far as i can tell it only does native resolution, and for me 2560 was too high too see text clearly. So im running my monitor at 1680x1050 to get text at nicer size. In addition to the mod I'd suggest going into nvidia/amd control panel and adding more AA/AF/FXAA/MFAA etc to make jaggles and textures look much smoother(can really enhance older games with these settings in driver). Anyway, google the Gothic Reloaded Mod comes up with this link https://demo.gothic-reloaded-mod.de/ and use goog translate. GL!

@IVIX1 Thanks for the help! I did find out how to get everything working and another friend helped me out with the remaining issues. Consider this mystery solved.

It is ONLY one proplem with this game. Steam overlay. This game was created in a time without steam. So you have to go DIRECTLY to the exe.data to start the game by itself. The Game has programmed by people who have created a OWN system for that. So you have to find the GAME start.exe from gothic. NOT from Steam. If you click on Steam->gothic start. It start Game overlay too. All the time. That iS F steam. IF you go to the folder: bsp.: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic\system YOU can find in that Folder (Gothic). Start that Data and you run the System without Steam Overlay. Yes that is a very anoying Bug. But it works fine i think. So What the proplem is with the Screen: " The game was created iin a time with Windows XP. The Biggest time of a reselution Monitos by 1600 to another anyoing High or length. So you have to go directly into the Data : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic\system\GOTHIC.INI <--- The ini Data is the Data to set the ingame prfoiles. You can open it with as a readme data. ALl Windows have Readme. Scroll down to Screen Reselution

; ... index of graphic-device beginning with zero.

zVidResFullscreenX=640 <- Length of your monitor
zVidResFullscreenY=480 <-Bright side of your Monitor.
zVidResFullscreenBPP=16 <- That means: 32Bit system or 16 Bit system ( think it is Color Field)

SET THESE DATAS TO YOUR ACTUAL MONITOR DATAS!

zVidResFullscreenX=1920
zVidResFullscreenY=1080
zVidResFullscreenBPP=32

And if you are interligent you make a commlink(Or directlink or hyperlink) from the Gothic start exe to your desktop.
That means, you dont need to open the folder again and again. For little minds: Right klick on Gothic.exe: set on Desktop. finish thats all.
