how do you use the inventory?
there seems to be no guide for that, I know how to open the inventory and allready managed to get a bunch of useful items in the inventory but can't figure a way to use any item, I tried almost every button and also how to I move items from a chest to my inventory

Action(Ctrl or LMB)+Up(W or Up Arrow) uses items or equips items in your inventory.

Action+TurnLeft(A or Left Arrow) moves items from your inventory to currently selected inventory (chest, knocked out body, trading with merchant)

Action+TurnRight(D or Right Arrow) will do the opposite of the turn left, moving the items to your inventory or to be bought from a merchant.

And the ones most people do not know:

Action+StepLeft(Bound to Q for me) or StepRight(Bound to E for me) will move stuff at stacks of ten at a time.

Walk(Shift)+StepLeft or StepRight will also move stuff in stacks of 100 while in the inventory screen.

And a couple more in for anyone who may not know:

To switch between melee and ranged weapons you must hold the Weapon(Space)+Up to switch between them, expecting you have two equipped.

Holding the Jump(Alt or RMB) will initiate an action if next to a ledge, moving the camera to the position of the ledge. Pressing Up while holding down the Jump button allows for easier climbing I have noticed.

Hope this helps anyone having trouble with controls.

It's been a while but you need to hold the Control button and use the arrow keys in order to move items or equip them. Control+Up I believe equips/uses a selected item, while Control+left/right moves them.

You may want to look up the manual as Gothic's controls aren't very intuitive.

Ctrl + Up to use

Ctrl + Left/Right to move items (from chest to inventory, from inventory to trading window, ...)

There are combinations to move tens and hundreds of items (ore, arrows, ...). Pretty sure Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right was one of those, don't remember the other one right now.

I'm even using the default settings and cannot select anything in the inventory. I am using CTRL and UP but that has no effect on the items in my inventory?

The arrow keys have been BROKEN with the last patch. I mentioned this already several times, but the developers / THQ Nordic are not listening.

Press Esc to open the Gothic mennu, go to SETTINGS - CONTROLS and reactivate the "Standard settings". This repairs the arrow keys.

This should be stickied. Regardless now that I was able to pick up something and actually get it into my hand. How do I put it away? I have a lit torch and even if I drop it by pressing the space bar to get into a fighting stance. Once I try to pick up the torch again, it just stays in the hand. I've tried all kind of keys and combos and not sure how to put it away. Thank you.

The best way to get rid of the torch is to use another torch in the inventory. This way, the torch is not consumed, but you get it back.

Remember instead of Space bar you can also use to draw an sheathe:
1 = Sword
2 = Bow/Crossbow

So in the mean time, I just have to walk around with a lit torch during the day or drop it? I can not simply put it back in inventory? No way to extinguish the flame if they want to get realistic? Obviously I just started, so I can restart again no big deal. But no way to just put it back for later use with out having to grab another torch off the ground first?

Will pressing 1 or 2 put the torch away?

Maybe there is a misunderstanding.
TAB = Open inventory
then WASD or arrowkeys to select items (depending on your control settings)
To activate an item: CTRL + W (or CTRL + arrow up)
TAB again to close the inventory

This is how you can use e.g. a torch from the inventory.
Now, to get rid of the torch, just do the same thing! Activate a second torch from the inventory!

Of course this only works if you have at least 2 torches.

Pressing 1 or 2 will also get rid of the torch, but then it will just drop to the ground, so you will lose it. With the method explained above the torch is put back into the inventory.

But what happens when I activate the second torch though? The first torch goes back into the inventory and the second torch is now in my hand?
RobinSword Sep 30, 2021 @ 4:26am
No, if you activate a second torch while already having one in the hand, the current torch is put back into the inventory and nothing else happens. May sound unlogical, but that's the best way to put a torch back into the inventory.

Hahaha! Yes, thank you.
