A little help to defeat Kharim in chapter 1
I'm trying to finish chapter 1 maximising XP without spending LP in any way (save the 4 required for the hunter skills) to save right before making the choice so to have a good starting point to play the game differently afterwards. Now, I'm trying to defeat Kharim and I've laid a general plan to do this: firstly I freeze him with one of the scrolls bought by Chronos, the I recharge the mana (if not using the ring of mana), then fireball scroll. I already tested this and his HPs are reduced to a negligible amount - 1\20? - but after this, I can't damage him melee in any way, even at 20 strength [10+5(learned freely by Horatio)+5(ring of power bought from Chronus)] using the mace founded in the cave of the dark goblins (23). I found the orc hammer (50) in the cave wardened by the hellhounds, but it requires 23 strength. Now I think the with the hammer I should be capable of inflicting damage to him, but spending 3 points in strength defeat my purpose, so I was thinking of finding another ring of power, but I don't really know where to find it since this is the first time I play the game. Any idea where to find one? Maybe there are other weapons that require max 20 strength to be used and deal more that 23 damage points? Also, I'm at level 10 (almost 11), and I'm left with only a bunch (3, I believe) of sidequest. What level is possible to finish the chapter with?

You don't have to defeat Kharim now. You can just lose the fight because it solve the quest just as good as to win. And you can beat him up later if you want the XP. Put your ore in a chest and unequip your weapon first because otherwise Kharim takes it from you.

That said, I don't understand why you want to have max level for chapter one. Since there is no respawn in Gothic but only additional spawn you gain nothing from doing this.
You could try to defeat a Rogue in the new camp. They carry 11/25 or 11/26 weapons. Or Nyras in the new camp owns an 11/29 weapon.

Kharim has an armor value of 55. Since he hasn't increased his sword skill it doesn't cut it.

Oneeyed, I know it, but let's say that I want to be stubborn and not be defeated for a sense of accomplishment. A personal quirk, let's say. For the max level, I must have misunderstood the information provided in the official faq that said the enemies respawn after each chapter, good to know. On the AP side of the information about Kharim, where did you find it out?

This is because I don't know any other game than Risen which uses additional spawn instead of respawn. Therefore spawing monsters is always interpreted as "respawn" because the concept of additional spawn is not easy to understand if you are not familiar with the concept.

You can find everything about Gothic 1/2/NOTR at www.mondgesaenge.de. Please note the database for Gothic 1 is in german only but most values are very easy to understand even if you don't speak german.

Thanks a lot, I found the answer to my question on the site, a ring of power is on Aleph (the lazy-ass) in the old mine. Other strength related things are on mummies, and I don't think I can already tackle the places where they are supposed to be.

So I just defeated him, before finishing chapter 1, but it took leveling up some stats and 2 hours of savescuming the fight
I have 35 str + 5 from str ring (I`m going for strength build anyway)
2 levels of one handed weapon
Diggers trousers +15 protection + 5 from protection ring, bought in old camp for 500 and ring from water mage in new camp for 200
Spiked mace 25 dmg (took it from new camp, from dude who tried occupied mercenaries hut, Gorn is talking about him)

All this barely scratches him, but low damage is better then non damage at all (I also noticed, that crits do damage no matter what)

I can take exactly one hit from him and next one is leathal

So the trick is to block the first swing, then hit him one from left. Then you need to catch his rithm, he does 3 or 4 swing, and you can block 3, before you lower your hand, so you need to strike before he make forth swing, and this is hard as hell

When he does 3 swing, all of this is very easy to do, because he actually gives you time to hit him, but forth one can be at any time, so my advice on this is to get gut on timing
At the end, I was relaying on audio clues from blocking hits, rather from image, and kinda died a little inside

TL;DR you can beat him without cheating or cheasing with long range weapon
