Save editing
So I screwed up and quicksaved at lethal 0 HP (ie, was killed by a hostile), having somehow missed my quick load key. Is there an easy way to edit the save file to put myself at positive HP? I assume my current life is stored somewhere in SAVEDAT.SAV, but it's kind of... Unreadable in Notepad++.

An easy way to edit the file, like in Notepad or something: forget it. The only way to edit the save file would be through hex editing, which isn't all that easy I'm afraid.

Your best bet would be to try and fix the problem through the console. I'm thinking of the 'taki' command, although I'm not sure if that works if you're already down. See this page for all the info on the console: http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic/?go=g1cheats

Actually it's much easier. Just activate cheat mode (type bmarvinb), press F8 and save again. F8 button will fully refresh your hp to maximum.

* it is only "bmarvinb" if you have not changed your keyboard controls, so that b is still your "character info" button. I changed my character info menu button to p, so for me it is "p" then "marvin" then "p" again. Then F8. Then you can disable cheat mode by opening your character info menu again and typing Marvin and closing the menu again. :)

You can also use b taki b and avoid using Marvin Mode, it should heal you, too.

And yes it is possible to edit your "hero save file". In the console you can type "hero export <filename>" and it will create <filename>.ZEN in your Gothic\Save folder. You can edit that with something like Notepad++, save it again, get back into the game and open the console. "hero import <filename>" will overwrite your current character with that saved one. Just remember to save your game again afterwards or else you will need to re-import your hero again next time you load the game.

Although this is possible, you should check if the prayer statues of beliar and innos still work. After doing this I had to restore my save game (thankfully I could revert to a previous version in DropBox). I got no dialog screen and the filter from the beliar statue was permanent in gameplay.

If you want to edit certain variables, Cheat Engine might be your friend.

Press "B" type in "marvin" press the F8 key. Careful not to press other F* keys. Do what you need to do then save and exit. There are game guides here. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/913888-gothic/faqs . The one by JemyM is the best and includes console commands.

How did you use Cheat Engine? It won`t run for me on Windows 10. Because it`s A memory hack. I can`t even download it, never mind use it. Windows Defender prevents it.

I never had any problem downloading Cheat Engine. Maybe adjust Windows Defender somehow?
Anyway, I run it fine, but using a shortcut to run it as administrator.
