Can't use thermometer with machine in the cottage.

There is a device in the cottage that receives power from apparatus to the left, and you have to insert a thermometer, according to walkthrough, and get a high reading. I am unable to connect the thermometer to this machine. I have tried my trackball and a plain, vanilla Microsoft mouse. Both have the same problem. Is there something I'm missing?

Aha! Followed a video walkthrough that appears on Steam site, and it appears that I had just never found the place where the thermometer was supposed to go. Hint: it's above and to the right of the gadget with the slider. Like many visual details in this game, this location does not stand out at all, especially since the whole scene is relatively dark--and I find it hard to boost the brightness much.
